Ok hope somebody can help me out hear. I have a 1991 H plate 1.0 polo and i have been having some problems with it loseing power and stalling and generally being abit crap. I decided to take the distributor off and check the rotor arm and all that type stuff but once i had taken the leads off i realised that i couldnt remember where each one went.

I'm now in a situation where the car wont start because i cant remember where each plug goes to. Can anybody tell me/show me where each lead should be on the distributor?

And many offer any solutions for stopping the loss of power and stalling?

anybody? really need to get this car going as its my only car now the girl friend has run off in my alfa.

From the gearbox end:

1 = right on the dizzy

2 = bottom " "

3 = top " "

4 = left " "

So thats starting at ht lead 1 (nearest the gear box) to number 4 (cam belt end) right?

I reckon your ignition timing is out. A fair bit in fact. Have a fiddle with the positioning of the dizzy, might sort it out till you can get a timing gun or a garage to do it if you don't have a gun.

what can i do with the dizzy to help with the timing? any pointer?

Theres a couple of 10mm bolts (one on the top, one on the bottom), slacken them off and rotate the dizzy while the engine is running. You'll be able to tell when it's running better, but I'd get it sorted out as soon as possible because you could cause damage if the timing isn't quite right. Mark up on the head and the distributor where they are at the moment, so that you can put them back if you only make things worse. Obviously do the bolts up afterwards.

you need a stobe timing light to do it properly, just take it to a local friendly garage and it should only take them five mins. Give them a ring first to make sure they can fit it in though. The people at my mate's garage get really pissed off when people just turn up out of the blue wanting quick jobs done there and then.
