Well i've been considering fitting a cone air filter / induction kit like a K&N or something, but have heard a few times that these do more harm than good, sucking in warm air from the engine. I Can't afford anything fancy like a BMC, and I've heard these wont make much difference anyway unless you have a big engine with a turbo and stuff.

What about K&N replacement panel filters? Do these make any difference in anyway, or just last longer?

I'm a total noob when it comes to engines so advice would be most welcomed.

if your gonna do it just fit a replacement element. induction kits dont seen to mix well with vws for some reason, or at least thats my experience!

if done properly they work well.

a cone filter instead of an airbox is useless.

cone filter, heat shield, new tubing and a cold air feed is what you need

not uncommon for them to kill aiflow meters though for some reason

Yeah my mate bolted up a cone filter to his AFM on his Corsa and because of the extra weight (he reckons) where the cone filter was hanging, instead of the airbox being securely fastened, whenever he went over bumps it knocked it or something. I don't know. But he blames the cone filter lol

Was just about to do the same topic so I thought I would just add on to yours instead of starting a new one if thats alright.

I have been equiring today what the best type of induction/air filter to get for my 6n 16v. My brother chopped all the slats out of my air box and made all the inlet pipes larger and removed any restricters, he then said to get a K&N panel filter cause his mate did the same and said it was awesome, he said he could now keep up with his mates car that he couldn't do before the mod.

I spoke to a guy who seemed to know his stuff, he said that he had pretty much fitted every induction kit to his car dynoed it in and gone on a rolling road. The one that came out top he said was a Ripspeed induction kit believe it or not, he even said that some made the car perform worse. I think I will stay away from a induction kit on its own purley the fact that it sucks in all the hot air from the engine.

Its either BMC, K&N panel filter or he showed me the Ripspeed one that performed the best but there is on in a carbon case like the BMC he said its identical but for half the price. He told me alot but said he is not sure on the outcome cause its hard to increase N/A engines and anything could happen.

I've got a K&N 57i induction kit on my 6n 1.4 8v and i definatly noticed a difference in performance, the car feels overall quicker to 60 and feels like it has more power at the top end of the rev range than it did with the standard airbox and filter. Plus it sounds great!

But i supose all engines react to things differently, maybe i just got lucky with it.
