Calling all MK2 boffins,

i bought my Polo a few weeks ago and when ever i go to GSF or tell anyone about my car they dont know what model it is or its spec and stuff.

I have a Mk2 1.3 GT 1990 unknown power and engine type.

Its carbbed and has round front lamps, a round air filter and rev counter, if that makes any difference or helps pick it out. I dont even know what power it has or should have. I have been told its the 75bhp late mk2/ early mk3 model. i dont know.

CAN SOMEONE HELP CLEAR THIS UP FOR ME.

if you want to know engine codes and VIN's PM me i will be glad to send them and answer any questions.

Ball

Try the engine and exhaust section too...

It has a little Cat in the exhaust.

Its probably a very late coupe s, or a parade.

What does the logbook say

Euro Car Parts can often tell what car it is from the reg no. Give them a shout.

He says it's a GT, not a coupe S in his profile box thing. Is it definately a UK car? If it's an import, it could be a GT, but if it's for sure a UK car, it's not a GT. If that makes sense...

It's definately a Mk2, that much we can say. Other than that, anybody's guess

i reckon....... MH engine 55 bhp, even though it has a gt badge it's not a 75 bhp gt that was only lhd with a GK engine code. Mines a coupe S but also had a gt badge on the back and the sticker in the boot says it's a coupe gt but it's not in the way everyone thinks of being a gt (if you know what i mean) That sticker in the boot will confirm what engine you have, easier than reading the code off the engine.

It has a little Cat in the exhaust.

Only just seen this reply. It has a cat? And it's carbed?

what we call a Coupe S was called a GT in Europe. They all got re-badged as Coupe S in the UK for some reason, they usually have the GT sticker in the boot still. Some managed to get through without being rebadged, so still have all the GT badges. They are no different to other Coupe S though, still the same 55bhp engine. No RHD mk2 got the 75bhp engine.

Oh that sorts things out then. Still doesn't explain the cat in the exhaust...

pm me your reg and ill give u an exact model. just put your reg number through an online insurer and they will match your reg to the dvla and tell you the make and model.

There's a Cat in my exhaust too. late 1990 Mk2, can't say for sure about the cat situation.

I have had a look in my boot at the sticker and the engine code is 2G if this means anything.

its got the P8 box and stuff.

Just what does this 2G mean though?.

Ball

2G is just the standard 55 bhp carbed 1.3 in the Mk2 I think.

Look at the sticker on the inside of the rear panel, under the load sill. Right under there, where the carpet meets the panel. It should say something like:

POLO COUPE GT

40 KW . . . 4+E

MH . . . 8P

Mine is obviously the MH engine, and there will be chassis numbers above, and specification details below. But is there any other differences in that information I've shown?

Yep - 40kw GT. Its an S I'm afraid, but got through without having the GT badge changed to S,probably at the request of the first keeper. Same as all rhd, then. MH/2G no notable difference - though yours is probably spanish. It'll tell you the place of manufacture on the slam panel plate. Mine is West Germany - made before the wall was pulled down.. The S was a detuned GT,it only had the standard compression (9.5:1) and tune, ran 55bhp @ 5200rpm and 96NM of torque at 3400rpm. Performance? 0-62 in a leisurely 14.8 seconds, according to VW. The 55kw GT,which was lhd only, reached 62 in 12.1 for the four speed, and 11.9 for the five. Sorry.. VW wouldnt fit the 55kw engine to the rhd cars,as they hadnt developed servo assisted brakes for the car. With the likes of the Nova GTE and Fiesta XR2 hitting 60 in less than 10 seconds,VW had to adjust product placement, and the Polo GT found itself along side the still-quicker Fiesta 1.4S and Nova 1.3SR. Sticking a tacky S badge on the Polo allowed the car to be registered as an S - the idea being to please insurers iirc.

Cheers for all the info Mikey.

Mine was made in 1989 in Wolfsburg mate, i have discovered that much from the VIN on my own.

I am seriously surprised about the 55bhp though tbh, it feels much more powerfull. but i used to drive a 95bhp 306 that was fairly nippy but heavy.

Again, cheers for the info. I can now start to plan mods and things and understand more about what people have for sale and its application and stuff.
