As some of you know I am looking at doing a GT conversion in my Mk2. I just thought I would consider running a carb because I like the noise and its keeping things old school!

What are the noticeable differences in terms of performance between 3F and MH engines if they are both running a twin choke Webber? Is it just the cam? If it is I will just get an MH run a GT cam and sell my conversion... But I'm thinking compression ratios are different? Can I skim the MH head to improve things?

Once you put a gt cam in an mh, they are almost the same. But the GT is still better. Unfortunately I don't think you can increase the compression, but it depends on what MH pistons are like. They might be like g40 ones that don't stick out of the block, in which case it may be possible to fit a thin metal headgasket from a mk4. If they have valve cutouts (like gt pistons) in them, then this won't be possible.

I'd get a gt or possibly a 1.4 abd engine. Leaning more towards the 1.4 due to their availability. (everywhere atm!) obviously you still need a good cam for the abd, one of the PoloPP or pitstop 268s will do nicely. :)

Ah right ok, but I take it the GT is only marginally better? Cos I can sell the conversion for a lot more than buying an MH. There's a few in my local scrappy which I know run well.

1.4 abd does sound nice, the problem is I can't really afford a fast road cam or w/e...And also I need to find stuff local to me. abd on a webber would be fun to do tho!!

you could always use a gt cam in the 1.4 in the meantime, which you'll need anyway for the MH. If the conversion includes stuff like the wiring loom then its worth selling to someone who will use it all, although you might make more money selling it in bits.

I can't give you an exact figure on the difference, but yeah it's not much at all, a few bhp at the most.
