which induction kit?

I was looking at induction kits for my 1.4 Cl polo, and was just wondering do they actualy work. if they do which one would you recommend ...ramair or KnN?

Work? Well they filter the air just like your standard airbox but give a deeper induction roar... Whether they make any more power is anyones guess.

Performance air filters are supposed to be used with engines that have a higher airflow capacity than standard. This means bigger carbs/ported throttle bodies, performance cams, Ported head, high RPM, better exhaust manifold and more. If you don't have any of these, an induction kit is pointless and will only add induction noise.

It's often suggested, that they don't filter as well as their quality paper counterparts either.

lol so what you are sayin is that it is pointless gettin one overall... the thing is i tried out a universal one just to the big pipe where air is taken in...it kinda did make a difference (or is that me believing it did :-p:roll:

I can't decide whether they make a difference or not. I put one on my old Suzuki Vitara, and I reckon it had a bit more eagerness to rev, but doubt it gave any power advantages. Just don't be fooled by the chavs who reckon they gained 20 bhp from an induction kit and back box :D

go by this theory - vw spent alot more time and money into researching the amount of air a standard engine needs than you have. If it needed more air you would have a bigger AFM and less restrictive intake system.

I am only fitting my induction kit with my exhaust, chip, cam, manifold, decat and bigger AFM.

wouldn't do any real damage or any great benefit on a standard car. if your in it for the nose then anything will do

not necessarily. manufacturers often restrict their engines power by different way fro different reasons, partly economy but also target market etc etc. in the same way that the G40 was de tuned to make the golfs look quicker

who says thats why the G40 had performace limited? maybe it was to stop it going into self destruct mode and melting pistons.

and most people like a quiet car and dont want an induction roar or a sports exhaust system.

The Land Rover Defender TD5 engine was detuned from the version in the Discovery because Land Rover thought the Defender, being a working vehicle and also being lower geared than the Discovery, would be running flat out and under heavy load all the time. So reliability is another issue as optima21 said...

If you ask me the G40 is detuned.

Small bore inlet manifold for one, making the on-paper power lower than the GTI, regardless of what the outcome was to torque. A catalytic converter as well as a rubbish V-belt pully system which in my eyes is simply a boost reducer.

The inlet manifold I agree could well have been put there as a power sapping method. With the cat, VW was only doing what most other manufacturers were at the time - they knew that emissions controls were getting tighter so made sure their cars were clean before the regulations came in. The V-belt system is also (in my opinion) not there to sap power, but it is a convenient way of preventing excessive boost (all manufactures limit the boost on forced induction cars even if it's nowhere near the limit of the engine, best example being Sierra Cosworth) and also increasing engine reliability. We've all heard the horror stories of what happens when you hit the limiter in a toothed belt G...

i wouldnt say it makes a difference to the performance in terms of making the car go slightly faster, but i did notice a difference in the revs, and the constraint on the engine in each gear..if you get what i mean lol...

didnt they make these air filter to take in more cold air in...which alternatively makes the car perform better in its gear ratio's???

Most off the shelf induction kits will just suck in hot air from the engine bay. You need a decent heat shield and cold air feed for the cold air part.

Most standard airboxes draw in relatively cold air anyway.

Most cold air feeds are usually just 'carbon look' plastic, but the BMC is made from carbon so is better for the heat shielding. On my GTi i've noticed a difference with the mid-high range power since i've fitted my BMC

ohh i see, i was looking at the bmc..but on a 1.4 8V i dont see the point of spending alot on it. I might just spend some money on a KnN one ..see how it goes

I got me a pipercross induction kit for £90 and it was perhaps the best mod i bought, it added a nice deep sound and it looks awesome so i'd recommend pipercross to anyone!

Also got a nice little performance boost

piperx foam filters screw up VW air flow meters ^^^

the foam gets inside and causes havoc
