I have just recently purchased a 1998 R Reg Polo 1.4L

As this is my first car and I will be keeping it a while I have decided to invest some money into doing it up but I have no idea what i can do to it or what to do to it! Any suggestions?

I have a few questions:

Is my car an MK4? Also what does 6n refer to? I have no idea what my car is apart from it being a 1.4l 98 R Reg and 3dr

I dont want to go overboard with it just want it to look nice, please throw me some ideas and also where I can buy parts. If anyone has any part thats for sale that will go with my car let me know!

ye your cars a mk4 meaning mark 4 like the 4th model or so and 6n I'm too sure on I'm no expert just from my memory lol

and i think its worth spending the money if your gonna enjoy it any polos is worth spending money on

i think the 6n bit originate in most of the VW part numbers having 6n in them. the 6n2 is the facelift model of the polo sold from 2000-2002/3 i think.

I thought 6n was the chassis code, like 86/86C for the Mk2/3. Not 100% up to date on my Polo marks.

Yours is the 3rd generation bodystyle,and is a MK3. No surprises there,then - or there wouldnt be without this underground classification being pushed about. Its wrongly called a MK4 by some people here in Britain,due to retardedness,or some cult motivation. Just call it a 6n,which is the chassis code of that version of the MK3,which seperates it from the MK3F (comically called the MK5 by some people round here,despite the fact that VW haven't even introduced the MK5 yet). If you dont know who to believe,just ask VW for their opinion.

yer i only said its a mk4 cos I've been told so by others and this forum says so.. so that means i own a mk3 lol how confusing :S

So basically, my 1998 1.4L 3door polo is an MK3 really? So if I am looking to buy bits for it I should look for MK3 bits?

I'd just look for 6n stuff :) but before you buy anyparts i would check the year polo that it is designed for

Parts suppliers will ask for the year anyway,but yeah,most recognise it as a three - but many are aware of the two-tier situ. As for what to do with it,slam it on its hoops and stick a G40 engine in it.. :) Seriously,its your car,and there's no end of things you can do to get it perfect for you.

My car is Red, the lighter Shade, what so replace the current engine with a g4 one? Where do i get one of those?! lol as you can tell my car knowledge is pretty primitive!

have a look around the gallery and see what has already been done, but most importantly, go with what you like and not what you think others will approve of. It's your car, you will have to be seen in public driving it, so it's up to you what to do. If you want to stick deep dished wheels on it and slam it on it's arse, go for it, but don't feel that you have to.

The world is your oyster really. The big advantage of coming on here is you can get advice as to how to go about the mods you want to do.

Yeh man, I know what you mean. I just wanted to gather some thoughts then see what happens. What can i do to enhance the performance, i mean speed, acceleration etc? I know i can get better wheels, brakes, exhaust, what can i do to the engine to tune it up?

well a performance manifold an dcomplete de cat exhaust will release some more horses so will a performance air filter...

also imo i would concerntrate on the brakes and suspension before i went and did the engine as imo getting these correct is more important than the performace at the moment

No disrespect or offence intended here mikey, but as soon as i read the the first post i knew you'd be found in here somewhere! Respect to you cause you know your stuff, but it just makes me laugh how anal you are about correcting people. You just make the confusion worse i'd imagine!

i think you should drop in a 1.6 engine from a 1998 skoda felicia, and run it on bike carbs. Should be more than quick enough, and some people on here can't help but sing the praises of this setup

EDIT: With regard to performance, i would be tempted to sort the handling and braking forst like polomon said. NO point having the performance there in a car that you're afraid to use it in!

I drive an 86C ( mr mk) and i won't be making it go any quicker until i feel comfortable that the car will allow me to enjoy more speed. But if the engine is what you're after, then either a decent induction kit or performance air filter would be a good idea, with a sports exhaust. If you want more, then you can get the head ported and polished. A chip for the ECU from Poloace on here will release a few more horses too. Just a few thigns to start with!

Thanks for the advice, the handling isn't great at all, infact i am having a problem with it stalling all the blimin time, I have seen on here its a common problem so I'm going to try and clean the throttle body and other bits as recommended to.

Also the idiot who had it before me put brake fluid in the power steering fluid bit, so now i am going to have to drain that and replace it with the correct fluid!

The brakes aren't brill either, It skids sometimes at low speeds and sometimes it feels like i'm pressing on a brick when I put my foot on the brake, but its got new brakes in but just ordinary ones.

I think first I will fix the stalling problem, change the fluid in the steering wheel then think about the performance!

Just go look at pictures of peoples polo's on here, look at members blogs etc and ask them how they did the mods that you feel like doing

And to mr true786 (don't know your name sorry) i would fix the issues with the car before you mod it - no point pouring money into a car that has problems. My brakes were horrific, the previous owner had let them wear down til it was metal on metal, and once the new discs and pads had bedded in they were great. You have to brake gently and progressively mate - not saying your crap driver but you do have to adapt your driving to the vehicle your in. Rather than blaming the cars brakes, why not work out how you can get the best usage from them? If you don't feel happy though, make get them checked over by a mechanic - they may need some adjustment. Also, if its skidding - are your tyres okay?!

Yeah the stalling should just mean the TB needs cleaning, and have fun with the steering. After that, suspension might be a good move,and maybe uprated brakes if you arent comfortable with standard ones. Once it hanbdles and stops nicely, then make it go quicker.
