i think my cables just snapped! or maybe it just fell off? its ok on the engine size, attached and everything. the throttle just pushes right down with no resistance. any idea how to fix it or where to look? I'm guessing its a simple job to replace?

You need to find the part that has failed. The accelerator pedal is held up by the throttle linkage on the carb/throttle body (it'd help if you told us what car you drive..) so if the cable snapped,the pedal would probably be resting on the floor. Open the bonnet and look at the linkage as you press the pedal. If the cable doesnt move,it could be snapped at the pedal or even just come detached,and your car would therefore have another spring on the pedal,holding it up.

its a mk3 gt, and yeh the accelerator pedal is on the floor, under the bonnet the cable is loose so I'm guessing its snapped at the pedal end?

Well basically,what you need to do is get your head down there,it wont bite,it may just need a bit of attention - the cable slots on the top of the accelerator cable,and may have slipped off. Get a torch in there if you have to.

thanks for the help mate, i had a good look after work, i pulled a few bits off to see a bit better and found that it wasnt connected properly at the engine side. at least i know how it works now in case it ever happens again. the accelerator felt so light when i took it out for a test drive so I'm guessing it was never on properly. oh well I'm slowly working my way around the car finding out how it all works so the more experience the better!
