Hi, I currently dont own a vw at the moment but i have had two vw polo's and they were great cars. The first polo i had was a vw polo mk3 genisis boulevard, (the breadvan one rather than the coupe :)

From here on the engine in the car became a mystery;

On the registration documents it said it was a 1.05 litre but when i took it for an MOT they said they thought it was a 1.3?

When i was getting an airfilter for it i had to get a panel filter to fit a GT, whys that?

I remember i had to get a new ignition coil for it and no where could supply the sameone as i had. So i ended up taking down the part number from the one i had (which was an official VW part) and they had no recognician of makeing it?!

I can remember that the car was a multipoint-injection model and always felt quicker than other polo's.

It certainly wasnt a G40 but i had a slight feeling that it might had been a GT engine, I'm not sure.

Anyones got any ideas?

If someone could send me a pic of a GT engine bay i might be able to figure out wether it was a gt engine.

Sounds like it had a GT conversion for sure. VW didn't do a multi-point injection 1.0, so it wasn't the standard engine. It would either be an NZ or GT conversion. I don't know whether NZ and GT engines share the same airbox or not. Not got any pics sorry.

So yeah, it's had an NZ or GT conversion. If it felt like it went better than most Polos, but not quite as quick as a GT, then it was probably an NZ

did it have a vacume pipe going to the dizzy if so it was nz

Yeah it had a vacume pipe to the air box (if thats what u call a dizzy)

What is an NZ engine then ?

Has anyone got any pics?

Here is a picture type diagram thing explaining how the engine was set out,

I dont know if GT engines have a different rocker cover but my one had the same rocker cover as shown in the pic.

That doesn't look anything like a GT engine to me.. maybe i'm just being an idiot.....

Looks exactly right to me - the pic isn't of a GT but the drawings on it tie up perfectly.

The boulevard and genesis are two different models, so which is yours?

Boulevards have 'polo' written on the black trim between the side windows, and seats with 'Volkswagen' written all over them. The boulevard was only available with the 1043cc engine.

Genesis <-- Clicky

Genesis models are fitted with tinted windows, sunroofs, green/grey tartan patterned seats (with split fold rear) rev counter clocks and 3 spoke sports steering wheel, no glovebox lid or cigarette lighter, and no black trim between the side widows. The genesis models are either 1.05 4-speed (possibly 5-speed optional) and 1.3 5-speed. A few early 1.3 genesis' have multi point injection which means the air filter is the same as a GT. Alternatively the mk2 GT (aka coupe S/ any 1.3) has a round filter like in the pic a few posts above

I know, that was the problem i had because i thought they were two different models too but it had both badges on the back and they hadnt just been stuck on (they had been on there long time) plus on the registration document it said it was a genisis boulevard and thats what weirded me out so much.

But Yes! It had the exact same engine as the pic has in it!

I feel really gutted now because i loved that polo and i sold it for only £650 and it had only done 55,000 miles on the clock with a GT engine in it. Rollocks

have you got any pics of it? Which did it look more like out of the two links? The biggest difference are the seats and the black B pillar trim (between the side windows)

Like I said, it was probably an NZ engined genesis. The ignition coil is a case in point. The Coil on the NZ is unique to that engine, it has 6 or 7 pins whereas all the other engines in the mk3 range are 3 pin.

Yep i think you have solved it for me,

I think it must have been an NZ engine because i remember the coil having 6 or 7 pins on it and that was the problem i kept having when i was trying to buy a replacement one because all the replacment ones wouldn't fit.

Plus it was deffinently a genisis one because it was exactly the same as the ones from the link.

So does this mean that it was a polo genisis from NewZealand?

Yep, definately a genesis. What's this about new zealand? The boulevard badge is probably something the dealer fitted to get rid of it, or a mistake at the factory. Best excuse I can think of anyway!

Ahhh I see! Apologies, NZ is just the name of the engine, often referred to as the engine code or the engine type. In this case it meas its a 1.3, 55hp engine with digijet multi point fuel injection. For comparison the 1043 mk3 engine is code AAU and the standard 1.3 single point injection engine found in most mk3s is code AAV.
