G-Lader Sound

Featured Replies

I am not sure if it is the charger in my G or is it me? I see people say about the 'sound' the G makes when it is boosting, but what does it actually sound like? I've tried booting it, revving it, but I dont hear any particular sound coming from the charger at all, only the usual engine noises

Maybe your belt's broken

People may be referring to toothed belts and pulleys, which make a very distinct sound on full pelt. There was a video of a mate's g40 on a site which portrays it really well but it seems to have vanished.

you probably wont notice much on a standard g40,

the boost return mod is the noticeable [makes the tcshhhh sound]

and toothed belts make the whiney noise...

Is the charger stock or ported or anything? Dans G40 is pretty stock but you still get that distinct G whine. Mmmm, G whine

**grabs man size Kleenex and fucks off to the bogs**

i didnt hear anything strange about it yesterday when u went past me

A bone stock G40 is fairly quiet, but if the belts are nice and tight the trained ear can still detect the lader doing its thing.

That's the major downside of my turbo conversion - I miss the noise when I'm going for a rag. Having said that, 10 mins into a long journey and I'd have had more than enough of the ported 'charger/induction kit/toothies screaming away.

The noise is awesome, mine is so loud, a friend of mine who was in the queue on Sunday actually commented on it.

I am running 65mm toothies, PSD 4branch and 63mm exhaust system. As well as a few other mods. :ninja:

I've heard a highly modded G60 on full song - and I've never heard anything like it. Just wickedly frightening, you'd not even try going against it. It seriously shifted, aswell.

The charger is stock as far as I know and to be honest, I have no idea when it last had a rebuild, but it pulls well. The twin V belts were changed for two new ones from VW themselves and they are on tight!

i think they hardly whine at all my mk2 g60 stage 4 charger whined like hell compared to a g40 charger ?

mines fairly quiet compared to some but does have a distinct sound. my girlfriend, mother, even dog lol can hear you coming up the street from the drone they make. i dont have an aftermarket exhaust or anything either. particualrly notciable to me and maybe others is in an enclosed area such as a multi story car park at about 2.5k the drone is really noticable and loud.

Most likely because this is the first time I have owned a SC car and always thought all SC whined like the eaton. Guess not  Oh well, as long as it works thats the main thing eh :)

My R1 Charger throbs at idle and you cant miss it. Whenever anyone hears it adn know their VW they always ask if it is an original or conversion.

An when its being booted, you can just hear it suck for its life!

I lent a charger off Pete for a while and that used to noticeably throb at idle too. Different chargers seem to make different noises, some are louder than others. I'm sure the porting makes a difference with the noise they make too.

can't beat it, my girlfriend always knows when i get to hers, don't even have to get out the car to get her i just turn up  . It got more noticeable when i put the jabba induction kit on it.

Wop, Wop, Wop, Wop, Wop, Wop - is what it was like on a smaller v-belt pulley

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee - is what it is like with toothies!

LOL

mine didnt make any noise til i sprayed the belts with some anti slip spray, cost £3 the car now pulls better and makes a funny whining sound (mind you that might just be the girlfriend whining cos I'm going to fast!)

Toothies or V belts mate?

std v belts!

I used never be able to hear mine with the exhaust that was on it when I got it (standard but with sebring back box) but once I changed to a discreet quiet powerflow one suddenly I got charger noise :unibrow:

At idle and low revs you can just hear a deep throathed throbbing from the front of the engine bay, at full throttle it whistles as it sucks the air in, amazing and addictive sound.

Its a very destinctive sound too, my wife was up in hospital with my daughter a few months back, when I arrived to take them home they were already on the way down to me, she had heard the G40 from the 4th floor
