I have a 1993 1.05 polo genesis (88,000 miles good bodywork)that has been stood for 3 years (garaged). It was not prepped in any way before storage and I'm now wondering whenether or not to fix it up or just scrap it and get another polo for about £500.

This is what I reckon it will need

4 tyres - £110

battery- £40

cambelt+tensioners change - £170

oil/filter/fuel filter change - £40

Good clean -£0

tax -£120

mot-????

So it could come to around the same as I'm gonna pay for another polo and at least I know that it will have a new cambelt and I know the cars history.

Has anyone been in a similar position - is it better to just scrap the car or is it worth putting a bit of money and spare time into?

Where are you getting this work done,Harrods? You're not going to be including a years tax with a 500 pound car,or four new tyres etc,so I'm thinking i could have it mot'd for half that,meaning you're prepared to spend double for no extra? How odd. Sell it on here with no mot to save destroying it,if you cant be doing with the hassle. I'll give you fifty for it.

You can get 6 months tax to cut costs for the short term and get 4 new wheels off here for less than 40 quid for sure with all legal tyres on.

People sometimes give away sets of wheels with legal tyres on for free. I've given away two sets of steel wheels with average tyres before.

You can get a battery for 23 quid if you know anyone in the car industry? I just got one for 23 quid and 2 years guarantee. IT's a cheapo one but I'm not fussed as it's no Ferrari!

Cambelt + tensioner (water pump) cost me about £15 for the belt and £35 for the pump. Fitting them can be a bit tricky, i was having to lift the front end of the engine up and down to get enough room for certain parts of the job.

I stored my mk2 for a year and a half with no prep. All i needed to do was buy a battery and clout the rear drum with a hammer till the handbrake pinged off and off i went! That car did sterling work for another 3 years between stortford and london every day.(Till I drove it into a truck, regretfully) it didn't get the love it deserved but it never showed!

Put in the effort, mate. If that was a reliable ride before, it can be again.

Cheers for replies. Yeah proberly gonna give it a go. I,m hoping that with a bit of luck I can get away with new battery and maybe 4 used tyres. Not sure about the cambelt job as I've never changed one before but have heard lots of people saying that its not as hard as people make out.

The good thing about vw's is that they really know how to build their cars. Its nearly 14 years old and there's still hardly a spot of rust on it.
