Engine conversions for 1988 Polo

Featured Replies

Help, I need an engine conversion!

The Pierburg 2E3 in my 1988 Polo 1.3 CL breathed fire and toated itself (and filter and fuel lines).

Weber UK (& North America) ran out of stock of 32 DMTR's last year and are not going to replace the line.

The Carb Hospital Ltd bought all remaining Peirburg stock but have sold out and cannot source a 2E3 for a 1988 MH engined 1.3. Have tried numerous second hand sources but it looks like it's the end of the road for the Pierburg 2E3. There are also no fitting kits out there for either the Pierburg 1B3 or Weber 32TLA carbs even if I could source one of them.

I've researched the 600cc bike carb option but it's not possible in Ireland due to much tougher emmission controls, (NB be careful bringing a car with such a conversion to an event in Ireland, the Guardai are getting new powers to do road-side emmission tests and impound vehicles - I don't know for sure but this might be EU-wide euro-zone legislation so check if applies to continental europe as well). Also very big insurance problems here.

So to avoid scrapping the car I need advice on engine conversion (plus gearbox, brakes and anything else that occurs to you). Thanks.

have tried to search this forum for engine conversions for a 1988 1.3 CL but no joy. Lots of stuff for coversions of later polos though.

no replies to this so I guess that the early polos are too problematic to put other engines into, shame, but off to the scrap yard it goes

most engines from mk2's and mk3's can fit. but if you get a mk3 engine it will be fuel injected so you will need the wiring to go along with it. where abouts in ireland are you?

that's good news, don't mind hassle with injection so long as parts are relatively straightforward to come by.

the later the engine the better so it's a bit future-proofed for spares availability and the damned emmissions regs

i'm in Athlone where the local NCT test station has just scared the hell out of me with info on emmissions, it can only get worse now the greens are in coalition government

I'm pritty sure that some mk4 engines fit too. there are a few more of them around

You haven't searched very hard - there are countless conversion reports in here for late engines in early cars (Nice pic of a 16v in a MK1 somewhere). They're not kept secret,I'm getting flack for the regularity i mention mine - also a 1988 MK2,with a 1998 Skoda Felicia 1.6 engine fuelled by four Honda CBR900 Fireblade carbs. Get back in the search box!

From the looks of the first post, it seems like he's already heard all about your carbs. :-p

Anyway, you can convert to injection if someone on here is willing to sell you the bits. There are a couple of options. (check converting mk2 to injection in the faq section at the top of the page)

I would probably do an NZ conversion. The 1.3 carb and 1.3 NZ Multi point injection engine are virtually identical. You need everything that bolts to the intake side of the engine. All the engine looms, ecu, etc, the front to back fuel pump loom & pumps and preferably the exhaust as well.

SPI is slightly easier (its covered in the faq) but is a less tunable injection system over the NZ

have you tried the weber 32/34 carb. my pissburg is gone as well so looking to get one as a replacment.

try

not cheap (I'm sure there are cheaper) but it would do the job.

I wonder what size venturis that carb is running because the DMTR is a 28/32 which is alot smaller than the 32/34. The 1.6 32/34 works ok but you have to change the emulsion tubes and air correctors (but keep std 1.6 mains)

DMTRs are still about. I sold one reecently. Expect to pay around £100 for a good 2nd hand one. Same goes for the DMTL.

Thanks to MikeyMK for pointing me in right direction over carbs which i followed up with Weber and other companies to suss out the situation with Pierburg's and Webers that i put in the first post. I'd love to use the search box but sadly it just chucks me out and requests me to log in again without yeilding any search results so searching the forum for me means going through each page individually which is slow and i'm bound to miss the gems i'm sure are there.

Thanks also to Gaz for the NZ info i'm looking further into this but it's a steep learning curve for me, the polo is the wife's whip my rides are Type 1 / Type 2 aircooled my current knowledge of wet engines only extends to land rover 200tdi's!

Thanks a million for the link lardyb you may have solved the problem (the 32/34 webers are expensive though probably cheaper than a re-engine).

I like this forum a lot, will probably bug you again some time - does the club shop sell "I HATE PIERBURG" t-shirts?

The huge snail-shell 1.6 mpi inlet does just fit, clearing the brake servo, but I'm not too educated on injection loom..

People are scared of carbs. Like clarkson says there are some elements of a car that seem to work as if by means of witchcraft. Carbs being one of them. Pierburgs are a bit over-complicated. You have to take them to bits to gain access to the serviceable components. On the weber, everything's right there, screwed into the top of the carb. The weber is a performance upgrade as well, which is another excuse to ditch the pierburg. Manual choke is another advantage (in general) as it saves mpg.
