Tuning a 1.0

Featured Replies

1.0 - 45bhp.

Tuneable?

Can it be made more powerful? things like exhaust, induction, remap?

Also, are Mk3 engines injection or carb, or both?

Please do a search! This question is asked soooo often and there are at least 3 threads with shit loads of info on tuning the AAU!

But I'm bored:

Exhaust - 4 branch manifold and decent performance system - £450

Induction - mk3 golf throttle body elbow, 1.3/1.4 throttle body, cone filter - £75

Remap - not off the shelf, but Poloace chip - £31 delivered I think.

And a GT cam - about £25 or so used.

That lot should see an extra 10 bhp or so...

Thanks dude.

I try searching but can't often find what I'm looking for :?

without wanting to sound like googlebot..

fit a GT. i doubt it will be more on the insurance than all that lot ad will be way more powerful in standard reliable form

I know, its stuck in my head but insurance is a huge issue with it, they are a much higher insurance group, so for a 17 year old i can't see the increase being small...

You might find the difference for a modified 1.0 and standard GT isn't that big.

I've said it for ages though, I've don't want a fast first car, cause i'd be driving faster and i really don't want to crash.

Why tune it then?

^^ Well ok, you've got me.

But i mean, i wouldnt want like a VTR or Sri because (apart from i think they're shit), i'd be driving them fast too much.

The 1.0 is undeniably slow, but i wouldnt mind it having at least some potential for tuning, for when i get bored of the 45bhp.

I dont want to jump in the deep end with a fast car, i just want to know that mine can be made faster when I'm ready for it.

If you are sure you want to keep the 1 litre then there is loads that you can do for some pokier performance!

The 1.0 can be converted to run the GT MPi injection system - you will need the inlet manifold (a g40 one is best) 4 injectors from a GT, the fuel rail, loom and fuel pressure regulator. It should make quite a difference - along with a GT Air flow meter and airbox - a jetex panel filter, fit a GT cam into the head.

Its quite alot of work, but should see a good few horse power! next is an exhaust system maybe a jetex or a modified ashley - 4-2-1 manifold fit a polo ace chip into the GT ECU and get the fueling up. It maybe a little rough, but it will be alot quicker!

One of my mates Danny is thinking about this exact thing at the moment!

^^ Definetely sounds like there is some potential then, especially, if most of the upgrade parts are just off other models..

someone on the forum even has a 1.0 with an eaton supercharger off a mini cooper S on it! ;)

I've just done this last week, it wasnt running too well but i found a proper GT dizzy for it and now its SO much faster. There is no comparison, my car is actually really fast for a 1 litre and like to rev through the range which it never did. I dont even have the GT cam in.

^^ How much did the parts set you back, and was it quite easy to do?

I got a whole GT conversion so i just used the parts from that. I'm putting the engine in when i get round to it.

It was pretty easy yes.

Hi

Do you need the full gt wiring loom and the ecu to add the mpi?

Yep
