Does anyone know if there would be any legal / MOT implications on having US style side markers in the UK, which stay constantly on when the headlights are turned on?

Perfectly legal - some cars,including all Volvo's,have them standard here. I've got some Mercedes Sprinter items,but didnt want to drill the holes - so I've just used amber reflectors. Subtle,noone else has them,and they really suit my MK2 coupe. The German Car Company was selling direct fitment items for MK4 Golf rubbing strips,might be worth seeing if they do them for yours. Otherwise,VW will be able to order US spec parts.

Thanks for the reply mate, Thought they would be okay, just wanted to doublecheck. I don't think they come ready made for my car so would have to adapt the MK4 Golf ones to fit

So how did the indicators work with that setup? Always wondered what they did in the US, do they flash as normal but are otherwise always on? And is there any problem with them being designed for non-continuous use? I seem to remember someone saying theirs kept blowing when they had remote start with the indicators always on or something.

All I did was leave the indicator bulb as is. I extended the loom that runs to the side lights so it would reach the indicators. After that I got a side light bulb holder and drilled the correct sized hole and lugs for the sidelight bulb holder to clip into it. Once it clipped in I put a bit of sealer around it to keep it water tight. This way works well because the side light is dimmer than the indicator so when you indicate the light comes on a lot brighter. Although when it flashes it always remains orange because of the side light being on its hard at all to see that the light is flashing and shouldn't cause any problems when driving about. I never blew a bulb using this method.

The only down side is that if the engine is off the side lights remain on in the indicators and not in the headlights. Well, people think this is a down side but thats actually what I wanted to happen so for me it was an all round successful plan!

Ahh gotcha, so the original indicator bulbs still do what they did, so they're not on any more than before. So do you not have sidelight bulbs in the headlights any more? Did you move the sidelights or add two more?

No I just moved them. When you turn your engine over the headlights come on. But if the engine is off but the lights are on the sidelights come on. normally they are in the headlights where as now they are in the indicators so they come on instead.

I can't see why you wouldn't be able to do extend and splice the loom so its got 2 side light holders and both stay on. I never bothered trying as I didn't want mine to work that way.

Its really not hard to do. The hardest part is mounting the lights in the indicator, once you've got that its proper simple wiring.

I don't think you can get them for the 6N2 like mine, but maybe you can adapt the MK4 Golf ones to fit

I'm 90% sure the fitments for the lights will be the same between mk4 golf and mk6 polo. Shouldn't take to much to adapt.

I doubled the side lights in mine,so I've got a sidelight in each of the four round headlights. But i cracked a spotlamp the other day,so if anyone knows where i can get one..
