MK3 Clutch problem

Featured Replies

Ok I've had an intermitent problem with my clutch and I'm trying to work out what is could be.

Do the mk3 `s suffer with a problem with the clutch pedal?

I can be driving along and the gears will select fine, then from no where the pedal will feel like its crunched and I can not get any gears even with the clutch pedal to the floor.

Is it the pedal that chumlyed the cable or the clutch cover plate sticking. I'm kinda wondering if anyone can cast any light on it for me.

All help muchos appreciated.

Cheers

Dave

Could be the clutch cable. Most Mk3s (as far as I know) were fitted with self adjusting cables which go a bit spastic with age. Mine did, every now and again it would bit about 1cm from the floor, so I replaced it with a manual adjusting one from a MK2. Worth a try anyways as it costs less that a tenner and replacing it could lessen the likelihood of it snapping due to old age (if it's still the original)

Aha! I get that aswell, I can put my foot on the clutch move it up a fraction and its already biting!

I've an account with GSF so I can get a cable cheep enough. I take it I replace it with a 1.3 one listed for a mk2 thats manual adjust.

Thanks for your help chap :)

The clutch is really stiff on the G40. Is this normal in the G or a sign that the clutch needs to be looked at?

I think G40's have a harder pedal than other models. Well out of the dozens of non-G40s I've driven and the 2 G40's I've driven I found the clutch pedal to be harder in the G40's.

I will take your word for it mate

In that case, I will get the brakes looked into first as they feel spongy and they squeak

Ok, I've just got my new adjustable cable from gsf listed 86-94, and they advised I may need to change the return spring aswell. I've ordered one from our VW dealer over the road just in case, did you have to change your return spring?

Dumping alot of oil in the cable before fitting is highly recommended

Both my clutches in my G and the clutch in my old G have been pretty stiff tbh, it just seems to be a G thang.

There is no return spring fitted when you have the original self adjusting cable. You just need to add the return spring between the clutch operating arm and the gearbox casing - the holes are there for it.

The clutch is really stiff on the G40. Is this normal in the G or a sign that the clutch needs to be looked at?

My first G40 had a really stiff clutch pedal (to the point of bending the pedal mounting bracket) - got much easier when I replaced the clutch release bearing and the friction plate. It wasn't the springs in the cover plate causing it as I left the same one in. It might be that the leverage on the release arm changes as the friction plate wears down.

Will I deff have to fit the spring?
