So I'm thinking of relocating my HU to the glovebox and making a wired remote for it out of my old tape player. Only thing is before my CD player HU got stolen it used to get quite hot in the usual place in the dash (mk3). In the glovebox it would be even more enclosed, could this cause a problem? I will be using its internal amplifier to power at least the fronts and possibly add some rear 6x4 speakers, not to excessive volumes.

Should I be worrying about this? Obviously there will be no airflow past it at all, and don't want it overheating or burning anything. Maybe I could cut into the passenger side cold air blower and direct some of it towards it..?

Headunits get hot, its perfectly normal. The rear of most units are actually heatsinks to allow the dissipation of heat.

Many stereo slots are even more enclosed that the polo, like mercs, e36 bmw's etc.

Its normal location has no airflow, though granted it isn't a sealed box, but I don't see there being any issues with fitting into the glovebox(as long as you don't surround the unit with foam). If you are really worried, maybe create some vents in the top of the glovebox, to allow some of the rising hot air to escape.

Someone on here fitted one of those computer fans in the back of the dash to help with this problem

Early LR Discovery - on top of the gearbox

My head unit has a cooling fan built in to it according to the specs but it still gets proper warm. Like a lot warmer than it ever did in my other car, ie the LR Discovery with the head unit practically sitting on the gearbox.

Thanks, I'll see how easy it is to cut into the cold air blower otherwise just see how it goes and think about extra cooling if needed.

That may have been me. I simply put a small 12v silent-running computer fan behind the HU to draw hot air away from the area and blow it toward the passenger footwell. Works a treat. The air movement is tiny,but consistent. Connect it to the line on the back of the HU that goes to ignition.

^ Yea was about to suggest that. Anything from a PC 12v line can be connected to the car battery. Silent fan: 6 or 8cm Akasa Amber series is a good one to go for, really quiet.
