was just thinking about this today...

when they send you a fixed penalty for speeding, can they also send you a penalty for a dodgy number plate?

When i got pulled for my german plates the police man said that a gatso wudnt ave picked them up, so you wouldnt get done for either lol until you get pulled, like me

Well i'm sure a Gatso just takes a photo, so it's up to human interpretation at the end of the day.

I'm really not sure mate, I'm not really clued up on speed cameras.

Different cameras take pics in different ways.

If it was dark and maybe the plate was super super reflective it might reflect the light back from the flash and the plate wont be visible, however I think its highly unlikly

And all the stuff about the plates not being readable through a speed camera is probably all bollocks to and just a ploy so they have some ground to stand on

The police where sitting at the side of the road with a camera checking insurance etc when i went past and my number 1 picked up on thier computer as a 2 cus of the shape and the tails it has on the german font so they had me for that. Bye Bye german plates

or can they only give you a penalty about something cosmetic if they stop you in person an not just off photographic evidence?

I reckon they can with ease, I believe it is automated for example the image is taken, sent to a computer which then reads it and gives you the fine, if the computer cant read it for example dirty, non reflective, germna it would be sent to a manual data entry place that would look at the picture and try to deduce what it says. We have that sort of system at work mahcines read the post codes, but if you have crap handwriting they get sent off to the manual place.

I was to understand that all the fixed post camera's were all interepted by manual calculation. I.e counting the lines between the 2 flashes.....far as I'm aware they are too concerned on the speed...but with the mass use of German plates now perhaps they will change their views on normally overseeing this???

I was told at one point when the german plate thang had just started, the people would just through out the pictures as it wasn't worth their time to prosecute a foreign driver!!!

Gatso's take a photo if the two pulses trigger the camera,and this photo is a complete photo. They can see if you've got 6x9s on the parcel shelf,they can see everything - its a normal photo of the entire car. The plate and reflectors glow brightest,but the rest of the car is also perfectly visible.

Police cameras can pick up german plates with no problems - friends have been done for speeding whilst running 'em.
