basicallly I'm changing the front door speakers in my polo real soon. people are saying that 16.5cm is the size to go for, but I'm having trouble finding any. wondering basically whether 17cm speakers would fit as they are alot easier to get hold of????????

also, if i am to buy any more speakers which arent vw, will i need to fit any new mounting bits for it to fit???????

I thought the Mk4 were 6.5" which is 17cm and I imagine the Mk5s are the same.

No, when I put new speakers in mine all you have to do is cut of some little nipple thing on the plastic surround on the car so the speaker sits flush in the mount, no mounting equipment is needed

ah ok. well il have a go at it tomorrow when i get the speakers and see what happens. having looked closely at the existing speaker, looks like i have to take the whole door panel off which is quite annoying as I've heard with most cars, when you do this, loads of springs and crap will fly out all over the place.

correct me if I'm wrong about taking the panel off.

If the Mk 4 is anything to go by taking the door card off it a piece of piss, really,

-handle cover off, 2 screws under it

-wing mirror blanking plate off

-then get your fingers under one of the bottom corners and pull

-go all the way around untill all the clips are popped - If your a fairy use a flat screwdriver but dont scratch the paint!

-then lift up and out not forgetting to remove the door pin.

There are two sizes - imperial and metric. The imperial is 6.5in (which works out at 16.5cms) and the metric is 17cms. VW,being German,will use metric. Most european cars do,hence the higher availability in europe of the better 17cm size. Its worth noting that both speakers are almost always interchangeable - as the imperial speakers are only 2-3mm smaller at the screw holes - which tend to be slotted to allow fitment in metric locations.
