I've just fitted a new cambelt, but the haynes says the belt should time up to the Z marking. The old belt did, but the new one seems to want to time up with the 0 mark instead. Its not a tooth out since i counted them and if you move it a tooth then it is way out. I've tried adjusting the tension and it twists 90 degrees as stated between the pump and cam. Any ideas?

I meant it lines up with the Z instead of the 0 as it should, in my first post i said it lines up with the 0 and not the Z by accident.

dont worry about it, they are quiet often upto half a tooth out, and its not likely to make much different on a standard engine.

If you've got a choice of half a tooth advance cam,or half a tooth retard cam,id go for advance. You'll have less top end,but a little extra torque.

If its a G40,

the O is the BELT timing mark, (use this to line up with the valve / head timing)

the Z is the ignition timing mark
