Just wondering what difference people notice adding a pair of 6x4's into the parcel shelf in a mk3. They won't be amplified (well obviously they will, but only by the HU amp). I don't care about anyone in the back as there hardly is anyone, will I notice a difference up front?

In addition to what,exactly? They wont compliment a bigger system much,but they'll transform a basic front speaker system. All this ice,subs this,amps that - with just a headunit and the four standard size speakers you'll have sufficient hardware to listen to music. It wont give mind-blowing embracing bass,sure,but enough for you to sing merrily along to.

Sorry yeah in addition to just the front dash speakers. Much as I'd like some mind blowing bass I don't expect it. The last lot got nicked so everything has to be hidden and I want to improve on my 13 year old tape player with a broken front speaker :)

So you think it would be worth it in addition to just front dash speakers?

well it depends what sort of sound you want, but if you;re not into ICE, 4 co-axial speakers arround the car definately sound better that the two standard ones up front.

Ok thanks for the advice, I'd like to be more into ICE but I'm not giving another £300 worth of equipment to the next chav to have a go at my lock. I'm even slightly worried that the speakers will be visible without the parcel shelf there, but I doubt anyone would want them that much.

well there are the mountings on the parcel shelf supports for 6x4's, so I was assuming that you'd be fitting them there.

Yeah I will be, but I don't have the parcel shelf in to make it absolutely obvious there's nothing to steal, and I'm not sure whether speakers would be visible underneath the supports.

yeah you'll just about be able to see them without a parcel shelf, but its unlikely that anyone is going to break into a car to steal some speakers that are in the standard factory location.

Yep,agreed - even though 120w 4x6s are available,and worth buying,they're not really worth stealing. Most cheap ones can still handle 60w,they were the best available for my Scirocco doors 7 years ago,so there's no reason why you cant have reasonable sound and a face-off headunit. But i advise replacing the parcel shelf for accoustic reasons - it'll sound pants with no shelf,which turns the boot into a box. And with no speakers in it,being just a standard shelf,its almost certainly not going to get targeted.

I got given some 6x9's, and for now they are just sunk thru the parfcel shelf - stealth shelf may come later. I'm quite impressed at the bass levels form them though, but the whole boot forms a soundbox to strengthen the sound.

But I'm sure the rear shelf mounts will be okay mate. I'd advise having a shelf back in there though, or it will sound shit. The speakers need some kind of box behind them to create any decent noise.

Another idea is to mount 6x9s under the shelf,and only cut 13cm holes for the tweeters to stick out. Sound will be as good,but with cheap 13cm grilles on the shelf covering them,noone's gonna bother stealing the shelf for some cheap 13's. However,this isnt new practice - i was doing it 10 years ago,so you're likely to get sussed if you're driving around kicking your shelf,and appear to have a pair of 13cm's in it. But when i see a stealth shelf - and its never hard to tell,because standard shelves look cheap - i automatically think "must be nice speakers in there".

Thanks all, I didn't think about how no shelf would affect the rear speakers... I'll have to rethink that. I'm sure I'm just being paranoid and nobody would notice or care that i suddenly have a parcel shelf and rear speakers but don't want to risk anything. I'm currently running one half broken front and one ok front from my 13 year old tape player so I'll wait for my new fronts and HU to arrive and see what it's like from there.

You are best running them off a small amp to get the best sound from them.
