KEEPS JERKKING AND DOES NOT GO OVER 3000 REVS

Featured Replies

HI, I AM HAVING ALOT OF PROBLEMS WITH MY 91 POLO GT,

SOMETIMES WHEN I AM IN GEAR THE CAR JERKS ALOT AND DOES NOT ALLOW THE REVS TO GO ANY HIGHER, IN ORDER FOR ME TO STOP THIS I HAVE TO TAKE MY FOOT OF THE ACCELERATOR AND THEN PUT IT BACK ON, SOMETIMES THIS WORKS BUT SOMETIMES IT STILLS KEEP JERKING

ALSO AFTER DRIVING THE CAR FOR ABOUT 10 MINS WHEN I COME TO A STOP AND TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR WITH MY FOOT ON THE CLUTCH THE REVS JUS KEEP GOING LOWER AND LOWER AND THEN IT STALLS EVEN THOUGH MY FOOT IS FLAT ON THE CLUTCH. THIS IS HAPPING ALOT ON THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS.

MY BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THAT THE CAR DOES NOT GO OVER 3000 REVS SOMETIMES, WHEN I AM IN FIRST GEAR IT SOMETIMES HAPPENS BUT IN THIRD GEAR + IT USUALLY GOES UP TO 3000REVS AND THEN DOES NOT GO ANY MORE AND THEN SOMETIMES STARTS JURKING. THEN WHAT I HAVE TO DO IS LIFT MY FOOT OF THE ACCELERATOR AND THEN PUT IT DOWN AGAIN. THIS SOMETIMES ALOWS IT TO GO OVER 3000 REVS. IN FORTH GEAR IT IS HARDER TO GO OVER 3000 REVS AND IN 5TH GEAR I CAN NOT TAKE IT OVER 3000 REVS AT ALL.

When i rev the car when it is out of gear it is fine and does not jerk and goes over 3000 revs.

I HAVE PUT THE CAR THOUGH A SERVICE RECENTLY BUT I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO CHANGE THE PETROL FILTER YET AS I CAN NOT FIND IT, IF ANYONE KNOWS WHERE IT IS AND HOW I CAN GET TO IT IT WILL BE VERY HELPFULL.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS?

THANKS

fuel filter near your filler neck look under the car you will see the fuel lines the lines will go to the fuel pump and fuel filter which is the big round thing

yeah, certainly sounds like fuelling... Get the filtre chnaged, then throw some injector cleaner in with some nice new fuel...

Lay off the caps lock mate...

hi, sorry bout the caps lock

i will change the fuel filter hopefully today

do you think it could be anything to do with the hall sender. or the distributor or possibily the carburetor

These are the lony things i can think of apart from the fuel filter

When i rev the car when it is out of gear it is fine and does not jerk and goes over 3000 revs.

well i can rule one of these out..... it doesnt have a carburettor if its a GT (3f engine)

golden rule of fault finding: try the simple cheap things first!

sounds to me like someone has messed around with the fueling and the timing. if i were you i would simply take it to a garage and ask them to set up the timing and fueling, as you really need specialist equipment to do it.

I have managed to get my 1 litre polo to behave in the same way by fitting a 1.8 throttle body and tweaking around with the dizzy timing, so I'm sure your car really only needs setting up!

Its a process of elimination really it could be a sensor or fuelling. Certainly change the fuel filter which is located under the right rear of the car.

Hi, just had a similar problem myself. Turned out that one of the cables going to my coil had a split in it. If you find that it's not a fuelling problem, it's worthwhile checking all your cables and connections (especially your earths).

I've had this kind of trouble a few times, I was advised that i needed a new hall sender, fuel pump and that my timing was out, however it's always turned out to be a wiring problem.

Hope it helps, check your wiring before having to spend on expensive parts (hall sender £117+vat!!)

could also be a cheap rubbinsh dizzy cap, i had the same problem with one of my gt's that wouldn't rev

What is the dizzy cap, where is it located what does it do?

thanks

It's the distributor cap, the plastic thing on the distributor that all the HT leads plug into. It basically splits the spark from the coil via the lead in the middle to the 4 spark plugs.

I have cleaned out the dizzy cap and it doesent make any difference,

it may be the hall sender. where about is that located and what does it do.

thanks

fuse box 3

fuse box 4

for a start theres no relays there lol try cleaning you are throttle body butterfly

There are two relays actually. One for the fuel pumps and one for the ecu. They must be working as the car runs.

i have changed the petrol filter and put some injector cleaner into her aswell.

I have cleaned the dizzy cap but it still jerks alot

When I drive it feels stmethings stoping the car from its full power. It feels like theres a cap at about 3000-4000 revs and then when i go past it she drives perfect

I am not sure if the leads are connected to the dizzy cap in the right order, if they wernt connected in the right order would this jerking happen

Wheres the hall sender located and what does it do, can i clean it to sort it out

I cant think of anything else that would be the problem

any ideas.

thanks

If you even had one lead out (effectively 2) then on a 4 cylinder car you'd be lucky to get it started, let alone run badly.

The hall sender is a part of the distributor that senses "Hall effect" and something along the lines of the potential difference (voltage) between the 2 magnety bits on the dizzy shaft. Basically...

It would be easier to replace the entire distributor I think.

I Have a feeling you could do with buying a Haynes manual to make it easier for you to find things.

The hall sender is located on top the of the distributer - don't think its something you can "clean" as such. You could replace it, but they arn't cheap.

start with the simple things!!!

fuel filter, air filter... spark plugs ?

fuel pump relay and ecu relay are left of where you were looking, under the plastic rain tray thing. they are usually attached to the side of the ecu by a bit of metal

fuel filter, air filter... spark plugs, have all been changed

I gave her a full service,

I think its a fueling problem as sometimes when I come to a stop at the traffic lights the engine just turns off.

I sounds like it has run out of fuel.

it sometimes now goes over 3000 revs but theres still a problem

It goes up to about 4000 revs and then does not go any more, i have to let go of the accelerator and then accelerate again.

does full service include belt? if so - maybe a notch out

It's the fucking timing and I'll eat my hat if it's not.

exactly my thoughts lol

I have not repleaced the belt, I think i will do that next

If the timing is out can I get that sorted myself or do I have to take it to a mechanic

Roughly how much will it cost?

the timing belt sould be under a tenner, shouldent it?

Thanks
