and got the reply that if i tax a car now then as it is the last 15 days of the month - I in effect get the rest of this week for free?

If anyone can say when the best day is for me to tax the car so not to lose a month of tax etc as it is the 30th on Saturday that would be ace!

As far as I'm aware you cant do it, if you dont tax the car til the following month they'll backcharge you (unless it was SORN). And if you tax a car in the latter half of the month, then you still have to pay from the beginning of the month.

Dont take that as gospel though, thats just how it always has worked for me in the past. Money-grabbing government!!

When to apply for vehicle tax

You can apply to tax your vehicle from the fifteenth day of the month in which the existing vehicle tax is due to expire. The tax disc will come into force on the first day of the following month and should not be displayed on your vehicle until then.

You cannot apply to tax your vehicle more than two days before the start of the new tax disc if:

there has been a gap in the dates in which your vehicle has been taxed ie the tax disc has been expired for a month or more

you have bought a vehicle without a tax disc

So basically that means i have to wait until 2 days before the new disc starts which will be Thursday? or Friday?

Darn Govenrment robbing buggers - walking in the rain to work today was one of those times driving illegaly was tempting.....

Why can they not just let me tax it now!??? If anyone knows which day that would be great.

You can pre-buy tax as long as you current tax as not expired.

But if you buy a car without tax in the middle of the month, you will have to buy the tax commencing from the start of the calender month. This would apply even if you bought it on the last day of the month and wanted to drive it on public roads.

Thats what I was thinking - so even if i bought tax thursday or friday - I still cannot drive the car untill Sunday the 1st...???

Bloody government - I think i'll still buy it so I have a car Sunday at least...FFS!!!!

Spoke to the guy on the phone at the DVLA who has said I can get the tax on Friday or Saturday however as I have not paid for any this month due to it being sorned then unless I pay for the whole of June - I wont be able to drive the car until Sunday....!!!!
