Girlfriend was driving my Polo today and it cut out on her and wouldn't start. I thought this might have been down to it running out of fuel so stuck some in and tried starting it again. Still wouldn't budge so had my mate town us back to ours. We managed to get it going by bumping it and it ran fine. When we tried to start it it wouldn't turn over and still won't.

Searching the forum seems to suggest temp sensor as the main issue. Is there anyway to check if that is at fault before we try swapping it? The car sparks ok and fuel gets through. Does anyone else have any suggestions of what we could try or what it could be?

Could it be the ignition coil??

It's unlikely to be the ignition coil, as the car runs fine. The temp sender is about £6 I think so change that before you go onto anything more expensive.

Well just tried to start it again as I'm yet to ring a scrappies and it started first time and ran fine. Just turned it off and tried again and it won't start :(

do people still think it's the temp sensor.

EDIT: Forgot to add that I can bump start the car and it runs fine but just won't start on it's own.

Well bought a temp sensor and tried that and it still doesn't start. That made no difference at all, so am going to take that back for a refund.

We've had the plugs out, they are fine. bumped the car again and it starts and runs fine. It did start with the keys once but doesn't start again. Does anyone have an ideas what else it could be?

I take it the starter spins freely when you turn the key yeah? If not, could be the ignition switch or starter itself, but I think the ignition switch is a common fault with 6n Polos (could be wrong of course).

Spoke to a fella at the local GSF and he said if the ignition switch goes nothing happens when you turn the ignition. Is that the case?

does it turn over at all or is it completely dead??

sometimes the starter solenoid gets jammed, a bash from a heavy spanner is all that's needed to get them going normally

It turns over, and we've had the plugs out and the they spark so could it still be the solenoid?
