but in europe there are lhd mk2 gt engine coded GK 75bhp lumps

the most power in our rhd mk2's is 55bhp

if its an engine from a mk3 gt its prob 75bhp if its a gt has it got an afm

You're fogetting that the early Coupe S came badged as Coupe S GT and came with a front mounted GT badge.

None the less the mk2 Coupe S GT was 55bhp.

The coupe LX was the 60/65bhp version which came with the GK engine, big arse solex carb, larger inlet manifold, twin downpipe manifold and larger bore exhaust and a close ratio 4 speed gearbox. I wish I;d never borken mine

Gk engines only were available in LHD format over in Europe, which were 75BHP

Some of the features of the GK engine:

Big Pierburg Carb

Large intake manifold(well same size as ports rather then the smaller-than-port ones we have)

Slightly more aggressive spec'd cam than the mk3 GT

Diginition Ignition system

Funky looking air intake system

11:1 Compression Ratio

Larger Exhaust

And have the 8 Bolt Design Early Mechanical spec head

The A reg LX I owned was the nippiest mk2 I've owned, it had a GK engine, it had a twin down pipe, a 4-speed box, the solex carb on it was pretty huge and the tailpipe wasn't such a pea-shooter as the MH engined Polo's I've owned.

In fact the trim was the same as coupe S, it had arch trims, red and black stripey bolstered seats, leatherette gear knob and gaitor, centre consol, thick 3-spoke style steering wheel, black roof liner, black carpets Hella lamps main and driving lamps.

Just saw that post above, it was definately a manual choke carb'd engine, perhaps it wasn't a GK then.

I've just found out on wikipedia that an engine existed coded GL which ran in 1983 in the Polo LX which was 60bhp (44KW) which may have been what I owned, hence the understatement in power and RHD.

I had this car over 4 years ago when I was 17. Mark and I stripped for parts within a few weeks of owning it without really knowing what it was until it had gone.

Eitherway, it was a mk2 with an engine with more than 55bhp.

probably just vw messing around as usual they like to make oddball cars, i picked up an irish mk2 with strange engine in it which turned out not to be a gk but no-one on here could figure it out either was very fast and had the twin downpipe,solex etc and was an 83,

mk2 GTs were all rebadged Coupe Ss in this country. Only a few kept the GT badges for some reason. All the RHD ones are 55bhp though. In europe they got both 55bhp mk2 GTs and a 75bhp version. I guess VW thought 75bhp was too much with no servo?!? Or maybe just that no-one in the UK would pay for a more powerful polo at the time.

Ah, thank God for that. I thought I was going mad then.

I had the same situation, I bought it as a non running car to be scrapped. I managed to start it at the breakers shop and got it home.

I was most dissappointed that the engine parts looked different, I thought the airbox and filter were just aftermarket at the shop. I described it on here and was told that it resembled the description of a GK, unfortunately by that time the car had gone back to the scrap yard, I've never seen another one like it since, I've owned quite a few since then too.
