Hi Guys,

Having a bit of a problem with the motor and I'm after some advice. I've had a search and found out a few things but thought I'd double check with a fresh post.

The symptoms of my problem are:

* Rough idle (Slight misfire) and it wanders betwenn 900 and 1100rpm

* Lack of power and juddering in every gear from idle up to 3,000ish rpm

* Stalls under hard braking as revs drop too low and don't recover quick enough.

* No major water or oil loss, no mayo under cap.

* Temp guage sits between 1/2 and 3/4 but never gets toooo hot.

* Problem was slight to start with and is getting worse.

I have ordered and am picking up new leads, dizzy cap and arm this afternoon from ECP and will fit them. I would do the plugs too but I'm working 100miles from home where my toolkit is and I have to drive home this afternoon. I'm hoping the new leads and cap and arm will sort the problem, if not I'll then change the plugs and try the timing when I get home.

The headgasket is leaking oil but from what I've been told by the last owner and from my own investigation this appears to be just an oilway to air problem and nothing else. As I said I lose no oil or water and there is no mayo anywhere.

The car is Adam H's old red loon with the chequerd bootlid if that helps at all.

Any other suggestions folks?

Cool, I've got the haynes manual in the boot so I'll have a looksee, do I need a screwdriver or anything for that? (Can you tell I've only had the car for a week and have no idea?, I've rebuilt minis and a camper but only opened the bonnet on this to check the oil and water so far!).

Should just need a flat head screwdriver

Usually 3 turns out from in is a good starting point when setting idle mix screw

I was using a computer in a school I was working in and it kept saying it was blocked, didn't realise it was actually posting all those replies!

Well I had a fiddle and changed the plugs and leads and it was better but it's now with my local VeeDub specialist who are going to give it a good tune up. They did this for me on my old MKII Gti 8v and it was transformed and I used to be able to keep up with 16v GTi just about so I'm hoping they can pull the same trick out of the bag (although not to GTi chasing standards!!!).

Well the garage just called and it's a leaking fannymold gasket that's causing the problem, they're getting on ein tomorrow and then giving it a tune up. THey've also replaced all the vacum hoses as some of them were a bit perished.
