my car has just started making bumping knocking noises , it sounds behind the dash or gears area, it almost sounds like its dragging something underneath the car but it is all clear ??? seems worse when i go slow and over bumps !!! its ok when i go 30 and over ????? also when its hot weather my steering wheel makes a grinding noise, almost like grit in the bearing... i have a 1 ltr 6n

hmm grinding noises... could be the gearbox i think.. Best thing to do is get the car upto 30mph then put the car in neutral and let it coast if the grinding noise disapers its something else.

Could be the syncho in the gearbox maybe....but the noises when going slow or over bumps may suggest suspension problems, possible that the front arm bushes have gone

Oh well, on a lighter note, t'was nice to look around your camper at the Oldbury dropouts meet!

I've tried alsorts, neutral it dosnt make any difference it still does it, its worse if I'm coming up to junctions and in traffic in 1st and 2nd gear ..only started to hear it last night

could be a snapped spring or worn out top mount, my car does the grinding nosie from the steering wheel aswell. I'm pretty sure its just where the rotary switch is worn for the indicators, might try a bit of wd40 on mine, should quiten it down.

The grinding noise when you're steering is the airbag slip ring in the steering wheel. This is common, and all it is from is the slip ring just gets a bit of dirt behind it and starts to wear out. If it's a really loud noise, then you can get it replaced (I think I heard someone say it was about 40 quid for the part from VW, but it was a long time ago, so don't quote me on that) but if it's not annoying, then from what I can gather, it isn't going to cause any major problems. Mine grinds when the weather is really hot, and I think this is down to the grease on the slip ring melting - it goes away again once the weather cools down. Mine's been doing it for about a year on and off, and has been fine.

(Oh, BTW, I think I've persuaded Penny to go to BVF with me. )

I it is a snapped springs it not really adviseable to be driving it. Have a quick if your car is standard height it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Well checked all under the car with Bill today and all we found was that the wishbone bolts on the drivers side, (mainly at the back of the wishbone) was loose and the springs were all ok, alittle rusty at the top, by the top mounts but nothing bad, just put lots of waxoyl on to keep it at bay...I'm annoyed the wishbone on the drivers side was loose because this is a sore subject as i had alot of trouble with the garage that did the work back in january :mad:

well the noise has stopped now :biggrin:

if it does do it again might change the shocks as they are original and I've done just over 48,000 miles and its 10 yrs old now so guess they must be wearing

sounds def like the diferential bearing in the gear box have gone, I've got the exact same problem, trying to source out a new gearbox at the mo
