I'm new here, and am just about to purchase my first polo :-)

I rang direct line about insuring me on my dads policy (I'm only young and it works out well for me) but they wont insure me on a 1.4 16V! Also direct line are the only company I'm willing to use as i am half way through a policy with them and i will have my own no claims as a named driver

so basically, what i want to do, is buy a 1.4 MK4 Polo (not 16V) and stick an induction kit on. will this make alot of difference to the performance? parkers tells me that a 1.4 alone has a low top speed and 0-60 reading compared to a 16V model, so i just want to give it a bit more push!

No a 1.4 8v Polo probably won't drive any differently with an induction kit. A bit noiser, and maybe a quicker throttle response. The reason the 1.4 8v and 1.4 16v are so different in performance is because they are completely different engines. Plus... Directline don't generally insure mods for under 25s.

Can you take your NCB with you? My sister is on my dad's policy and they will not issue her with an NCB certificate to go elsewhere with.

I would suggest your best bet would be to ring around different insurers.

If they are all coming up too expensive it may be worthwhile getting a cheaper to insure car, learning the basics and earning some NCB on your own insurance then getting a 16V.

Otherwise, as above an aftermarket airfilter will make little difference to performance unless, like on my mk2, the original airbox was leaking badly and the aftermarket one didn't wherby the difference was really impressive once I had adjusted the fueling and idle speed.
