Hi Guys, I'm new on here. Just bought a mk4 polo (literally a few hours ago), got it home, and it wont start, its as if the steering lock is on and the key wont turn all the way, is it common for the ignition barrel (i think thats what its called) to go on these cars? Any ideas what i can try?

Have you tried wiggling the steering wheel while trying to turn they key? Sounds like the steering lock is on and your not shaking hard enough to unlock it!

I don't mean to offend, but have you tried moving the steering wheel just slightly, while trying to turn the key?

I find I usually have to do that if my steering lock engages.

yes I've wiggled the steering wheel, its definately not on steering lock. Thats what it feels like though.

Is there anything else it could be? Possibly the barrel?

Is it the right key,and how worn is the key? Might need new locks. Id ask the previous owner if there's a knack to it,in the way certain cars can develop characteristics - or just start packing up,for want of a better term. They may claim there was nothing wrong with it,in which case you should be able to tell if they're lying - and conclude that the car was sold on,due to having a dodgy ignition barrel. They're not hard to replace,but if you dont want to have to use two keys for the car,you'll need to change all the locks. Thats time consuming,which means labour intensive,which means expensive for a garage to do - so its a diy job,if you're up for it,or blag a friend who could be persuaded.

I'm presuming its the right key, its started fine before a good few times. Seen it start about 6 times i guess. He said there was a knack to it but i dont have it Unless its just packed in when i got it. I think I've tried the spare key too.

I wouldnt dare touch the locks, i have an alarm fitted on it too which i thought it was but the alarm is apparently fine according to a mate who fits alarms for a living.

The other half is working on it today to see if he can sort it, still no luck though.

well, i called the AA out, i didnt think of that yesterday. Its the ignition switch apparently, i want to drive my new car!!
