the noise will be the alternator belt slipping. you can try tightening it up a bit but if you need a new one they're only about £3.

As for the 2nd question, what car are you talking about? It sounds temperature related so if it's a mk3 then probably start by replacing the blue temp sensor, if it's a mk2 then it might be the auto-choke mechanism.

You need a new alternator belt most probably.

The rough idle sounds choke related, what type of polo is it? How old is it?

I don't mean to critiscise your intelligence but I have had people phoning me up after selling a manual choke car claiming that it is running poorly, it has simply been that they haven't pulled the choke.

How fast is the idle speed when it sounds poor? is the engine shaking around a lot?

Take the filter off and make sure the choke valve is closed, if it isn't then push it down gently by hand. If it runs well then it is your choke mechanism.

hi its definatley not the belt because iv just had it done i meen like last week brand new belt and its a mk3 polo 93 plate and the idle speed is just enough to keep it from stalling and wen i rev it it sounds like a tank for 5 mins then its ok with the annoying whine from somewhere

I still reckon the belt needs tightening up.

New belt last week = re-tighten this week.
