I've got a tims gauge just now and it reads complete bollocks! the needle never goes higher than 1/2 a bar - the needle flies right round to 1/2 a bar and then freezes there!

So what should I replace it with?

Autometer gauges are good.

Are you sure it's your gauge that's the problem though?

I've got racetech gauges. autometer and VDO are also top brands along with SPA and Stack. depends on your budget really.

I have a TIM gauge in mine, as a temporary measure really, but it's reading about 0.8-0.9 bar with toothed belts, full blend and GT inlet, which I think is a little low? It was making about 0.8 with the v belts and a 68mm pulley, and I know the charger's healthy because it had an intermediate service 2 weeks ago.

I'm a little choosy though as I want something that looks like it's meant to be there. I'd love a VDO one but they've all got the wrong font on the dial. The TIM one's spot on, but if I'm honest it's a little too colourful for my liking.

Previously i had a 63.6mm pulley on my charger (outside diameter was 65mm, but the previous owner had taken a file to the pulley and made it so the belts sat lower into the grooves) and it ran at 1.1BAR. I've since replaced the old pulley with a new 65mm pulley and a new charger after an oil seal blow out. Since then i've also fitted a new boost gauge as the other ones seals blew out! It was a new Tims gauge - but 2nd hand, and it really hasnt gone higher than 1/2 a bar since.

I'm going to get one of the Autometer gauges off ebay and see what happened!

I'm pretty sure you will find those are the AutoGauge rip off version of Autometer ones.

can someone explain the benefits of a boost gauge? do you boys use it whilst driving? i.e. to see when the best time to plant your foot is?

or is it just something to keep a check on presure and to see there are no leaks and everything is running sweet?

I've steered clear as i dont like butchering the dash and to be honest i dont know really what I'm looking for lol

I don't really look at mine when i'm driving and yes,it is handy having one just to keep an eye on the boost.

Yeah Dan just to keep an eye on boost levels really. You dont need to butcher the dash, either use hot glue or some bostik or something. I'll show you how mine are mounted the next time I see you, (they are Pete's old ones).

I replaced my VDO one (because it was shit) with the Racimex one from the G-ladersite. Cheap enough and seems accurate enough, and looks nice and discreet.

When i was heading down to VAGfest on Sunday towing the trailer my gauge flicked up passed 0.75 BAR quite a bit. but as soon as we ditched the trailer and took the car for a blast when we got home the gauge wouldnt show above 0.5 BAR again! What the hell is going on?
