I've never taken one off before but... remove the air filter box, accele cable, all multi plug connectors from stepper motor etc, unclip and remove both fuel hoses (careful of residual fuel pressure squirting you in the eyes ;) ) then in the top of the injector unit there will probably be 4 bolts holding it onto the inlet manifold, these might be T30 torx bolts or 5 or 6mm allen key bolts, undo these (they'll be quite long) and then carefully remove the injector from its base. you will probably need new gaskets unless your lucky.

sorry if this is a bit vague but as i say I've not taken one off before nor do i own or ever have owned a MK4, but i am a mechanic so all this is from memory of what an SPi looks like

Thanks - it has a retaining valve!?!??! and it seems to be this stopping it - does that make sense and can you give any advice on how to get this off?

not sure what you mean, are you able to get any pics up?

If it's just the injector you don't have to undo the throttle cable. If it's anything like the 1.0/1.3/1.4/1.8 spi units then as follows:

Remove airbox/throttle body elbow and unclip multiplug

Undo fuel pipes (17mm spanner)

Undo the 4 bolts round the edge (10mm socket)

Using flat nose pliers or similar squeeze in the two black clips either side of the injector unit, and prise it off.

That's it!

edit: had this page open for ages and didn't see the two above replies. Please can you expand on the retaining valve.

Thanks guys, the pliers and some pulling worked!!

Good stuff. I think adeg40 was describing how to remove the entire throttle body :D

Ah well, I just got lucky. Literally 20 minutes before my post I changed the injector on my spi
