I'm not having a winge cause its my own fault at the end of the day. Just want to know what to expect through the post. Was a 30 zone but I wasn't paying attention and was doing around 40 and got a nice big flash in my eyes. Proper bright bastard! Annoying thing is I drive past that camera loads and I know its there just was busy chatting and not paying attention. Although after it I was very careful!

I'm guessing my speedo is out by a bit but if its not lets assume I was doing 40 in a 30 what am I looking at?

At a guess was thinking £30/60 fine and 3 points.

Yeah if you get caught at 40 in a 30 it'll be 3 points and 60 quid fine, never know with speedo inaccuracies you might be lucky and not get anything

Worst case, 3 points and £60 ish. As above, chances are, speedo overread and a margin for error ont he cameras threshold and you're in the clear.

Was it a Gatso (square lens) or a truvelo (round lens)? Gatso's flash, but are fairly unreliable and only work from behind when you're driving away from them. Truvelos don't flash (PIR imaging) and work in either direction.

Yeah, the part about being blinded by the camera might put you in the clear in terms of which way the camera was facing

Well I thought that aswell but the camera looked like it was supposed to be poitning on my side of the road. I drove back past it to find out if it was a gatso or a truvello and it looked like a gatso. I thought if its a gatso its probably the otherside thats been set off not me. I've had that happen on the way to scotland before.

Guess I'll have to wait and see :(

gatsos are the yellow boxed cameras, truvelos are usually blue or just plain grey. gatsos also need road marking to calculate speed whereas truvelos dont. So if there was marking on the road then its a gatso.

Good fun isnt it? Everyday i do the same one without fail, they probably dont bother putting film in anymore

So if you boot it along in the other carriageway then you can set a Gatso off? How can you be sure you won't get pulled, does the pic not show your number plate?

Blue is TMS (traffic master), they could be used as speed cameras, but aren't. Grey is Red light camera in most cases. Local auhorities had to paint speed cameras bright yellow if they wanted to keep the revenue off them.

Gatso's do flash randomly when they're out of film. I've set one off doing 35 in a 40 before.

a gatso cannot detect a speeding car coming towards it, only as you pass the camera and are travelling away from it. I've tried it many times.

But what if you're going in the other direction when someone speeds past in the correct direction? You still get the flash.

Kam, you could go on one of the 'speed awareness' courses if you're offered the chance. The one my dad recently done was a bit more expensive than the speeding fine at about £70 , but it kept the points off his license. Unless of course you've already done one, in which case, your 'get out of jail free card' has been used.

Ahem on chris moyles r1 show this morning they said it was up to 39mph in a 30 zone.. but that's hardly sound advice is it!

yeah i see what you mean you could still get flashed but it would be a lot less of an occurance and it wouldnt be a deliberate act to flash in your eyes.

i got caught doin 47 in a 30. i got a letter through the post asking if i wanted 3 points and £60 fine or attened a speeding course for £130.

i dont no if it matters but i got caught at 5am

One of my mates is going to have an interesting time soon... He was hitting 140 just before a speed camera and managed to get some braking in, the letter said he's getting done for doing 102 in a 70. He's been driving 3 years, so maybe 11 points and a fine? (clean license)

id say ban tbh doin 102mph. he'll be very lucky to get off with just points and a fine

Gatso's dont need road markings, they often have them but they arent neccesary to their function. Road markings help to convict you as it shows how far they go but I know someone who was done by a Gatso on an unmarked road.

^^ wasnt aware gatsos worked without markings? learn something new every day i guess cheers fish, (reminder to self be extra careful) lol

If I get the option to do the course I'll just do that. Not to fussed about the fine cause once its paid its paid. Where as the points will stay there for 3 years don't they?

I could do without points for the car I'm building or else the insurance will be an utter bastard.

Points are on your licence four years but only valid for three, and in regards to the "speed awareness course" its all dependant on weather the Police force that stop you offer it. If they are going to offer the course its all dependant on if its available in your area which more than likely its not
