will the above be down on performance compared to a standard de-cat pipe due to the exhaust gas collecting up in where used to be the catalytic converter and will the exhaust sound like a tin can?

my mate did this to his polo and it made the exhaust note sound raspy and a little bit tinny

No point in doing this, you would be better leaving the internals of the cat in or getting a proper replacement pipe. It will change the back pressure a lot and sound very tinny due to the wall thickness. It would most likely be down on performance.

Didn't someone used to have an exhaust with no baffle in it and it had this really odd tinny sound. Think it might have been Robins old valver.

smashed the cat up at work, and hardhitter why would be leaving the internals better? its a huge restriction and the walls of the car are only as thick as the exhaust, doubt it would down the performance

Sorry to hi-jack your convo mitch but it seems silly to start a new one for basically the same topic. I was just wondering where i can get a de-cat pipe from, I've looked all over the place but had no luck yet. I have thought about making my own but i dont have access to a welder and i dont have the cash to buy one atm. Is there any exhaust places that might cut the cat out and weld a bit of pipe in place maybe.

It would be better having the internals because you are expanding the gasses that need to fill the cat, hence you need to have some sort of resistance otherwise it will affect the back pressure a lot. The cat is not as huge restriction as you might think, providing it's not damaged. The wall of the cat is thinner than the wall of the pipe.

If you are handy with a welder and can get some pipe bent, it's not that difficult to cut the cat out of the downpipe and weld a piece in.

I had this done to my GT for ages. Sounded very tinny and raspy. Pretty good actually.

Performance wise, when i first got it done, IMO i felt faster. I dont think it will restrict performance personally.

But since i have put a straight through pipe through, the peformance is a lot better i must say!

Just cut the cat off, and put some tubing in place (with a lambdsa nut welded in)! no need for all this full downpipe nonsense!
