3F on a carb

Featured Replies

Hey,

Just about to do an engine swap from my dying 1043 to a 3F engine, but ditching injection in favour of a weber carb (or pierburg depending on ££). So far I've got almost everything worked out apart from ignition (and vacuum stuff)...

Can I run the GT dizzy with an electronic ignition module from an MH engine (later mk2)?

Or do I need an MH dizzy with the vacuum advance on it and connect that up to the carb?

If someone can shed some light on this I would be very grateful. All the bits I can get from an MH in a local scrapyard but I'm leaving in an hour. Might just buy a dizzy and flog it on if not needed.

Cheers

Matt

GT dizzy doesn't have the mechanical advancing mechanism built in so you will need a mk2 dizzy

use a mk2 ignition amp and distributor from cars made after 1985.

Hes not using twin 40's I'm afraid

yeah I know after I read it again   , but so many poeple seem to be asking about twin 40's and bike carbs these days.

Probably because induction noise is so good and ITBs cost too much!

Cool I got a distributor and ignition loom/module from a parade at the scrappy. Gonna get the old engine out 2moro once I can get to the driveshafts lol.

And yea lol screw all this bike carb/twin 40 stuff I'm just going for a single Weber.

The guy at the scrappy sold me a fuel pump for a tenner but it's probably going to put out a fair bit of pressure, I'll probably need a fuel pressure regulator won't I? Gonna be a Weber DMTL.

if you've got a fuel accumulator thingy on the side of the carb you should be able to get away without a pressure reulator

a "swirl pot"

Ah right ok. Will have to see when the carb arrives haven't got one yet

Why don't consider running the injection system ?

Can't be bothered with swapping looms/plugs etc (mine's an early mk2) and I like the sound a carb makes... plus I'm keeping it old school yo

Yea don't just connect the fuel pump straight to the carb.. you need some kinda fuel tank return system, either a swirl pot, or a t-piece with a restrictor in one end.

Ah so the Weber won't have a return pipe?

A T piece sounds like a good temporary measure to get it running, how does it work?! Sorry if it's a dumb question, I was gonna just connect it straight to the carb :ninja:

some webers have a return and some don't. Golf ones usually don't have one so you have to get a swirl pot, available from gsf. Danny Lee should be able to dig out the part number for you. :)

use NZ/roco ign ....at least its hall not points............pm

how about D.I.S.

how about D.I.S.

lol its cool I got ignition side of things covered now, but thanks anyway. And gonna use a plastic swirl pot from scrappy until I can afford a metal shiny one hehe. Found the part number as well cheers.

when u say induction noise do you mean the piss annoying 'dyson syndrome' my carb engine has. sounds like my bloody hoover.

Why doesnt anyone make their own inlet manifold and mount a GT fuel rail (or other multipoint fuel rail) in it, then mount a knackered set of bike carbs on the other side that you can weld up and just use as 4 individual throttle plates. ITB's are expensive but knackered bike carbs, 4 steel tubes and an afternoons welding would give you change for a pint out of £20 I might do just as I've described after I've megasquirted my GT.
