Bought a mk3 Genesis 1.05 on thursday, discovered tank leaks today!!

Is there any fix other than replacement & how easy is it to get out??

Anyone got a spare they want to sell??

all mk3 are fuel injection ,some are single point injection some are multi point

When we did mine we unbolted the rear beam on the drivers side so the filler neck could come out, it won't fit otherwise (so don't axle stand it on the rear beam :)). The non-vag tanks will probably need the filler neck bending a little to make it line up, mine from gsf did but otherwise it fitted fine. You'll need to take the lift pump out from under the rear seats being careful not to bend the float, and there's various breather pipes around the filler cap that need to be sorted also. I'm pretty sure the exhaust back section needed to come off or at least be swung out of the way. From what I remember there's a big strap holding the tank in place, and there's some pipes of some kind clipped to the tank at some point. There's no drain hole so you'll have to syphen any remaining fuel out. That's all I can remember, hope it's of some help!

Assuming it's the standard engine it'll be fuel injection, single point.

From what I understand, the job is a bit of a pain because it's fiddly and the tank requires a bit of twisting and shoving to get it in. However, it's not out of the scope of the home mechanic as there's a few people on here who have managed to fit it themselves. Personally, I left it to a garage to do.

In the meantime, you could try some of the temporary 'fixes', like tank putty or tape that you can get from motor factors. This could stop the leak, giving you time to get the tank, as well as slowing the loss of that expensive fuel!

ALL 1990-1994 Polos are fuel injection, with 1043cc all being Bosch single point.

The patent tank filler neck will need some tweeking, i helped a mates mate do one on his drive last weekend same procedure as above, yup it was apig to do,took most of the morning.

I did mine on the ramp at work in under an hour so i can't see a independant garage charging to much to fit one.

Best to give the new tank a good coat of hammerite tooas they come unpainted.

I had a new tank fitted to my 1.05 genesis about 3 years ago by a local mechanic - £150 all in. Phone around for quotes or see if you can get one cheap from a local scrappy then get a garage to fit it.

Its not that hard to do i think I just swapped a tank this weekend and it was a bit of a fiddle but nothing to write home about. Put the car up on a ramp on the left hand side and axle stands on the right. Remove the right hand rear wheel. The rear beam doesnt need to be removed just take the wheel off instead. Drop off the back box. Disconnect the lift pump and withdraw it from under the seat (its under a little black cover, then bang it anti clockwise to undo it and remove). Pull out the black surround from around the filler neck, disconnect the pipes around the filler neck. Get someone to sit in the car and hold the brakes on while you undo the handbrake cable brackets off the rear beam. undo the big strap (17mm socket) and the little brackets (13mm socket). Pull the tank off, it will be stiff but just jiggle it and it will come off. manouver the filler neck out into the wheelarchand then slide the tank out. Repeat this in reverse to refit. :-)

would fibreglass work as a tempory fix? just out of interest or does petrol melt through stuff like that!

fibreglass works, but if i were you id use stuff called "petro patch" you slop on this wierd grey gloop, than lay on these bandage things you get with it. Then slop on more gloop until the whole thing is coated. Come back in a couple of hours and the tank is sealed and the bandage things are hard as a rock.

thanks guys for all the help - we did it this afternoon - took 3.5 hours, and was a pig trying to line the filler cap up with the body work, but I didn't drop the axle, just took the wheel off ,as suggested, and all was well.

Lets just hope it keeps running now!!
