I have what seem to be a lazy starter motor problem on my '89 1.0 bread van. Turn of the key when cold results in either nothing at first or a very slow turning starter motor.This problem does seem to be getting worse and I have to move the car and put it gear while rolling to move the engine over a little bit. This then seems to let the starter motor turn slowly and then finally it starts. Not ideal.

I am wondering if it is an electrical problem rather than a mechanical problem as the starter motor work and sounds fine when the engine is up to temp.

Any help appreciated.

Could be the battery not holding charge overnight?

Try jump starting off another car when yours is cold.

If it works like that then most likely it's the battery not the starter.

Take it to a tyre place that does free battery checks and get them to hydro it.

Have you got anything draining power when the car is off? Aftermarket HU? Amp?

Nothing extra on the car. Bog standard with the original radio cassette.

When was the last time you changed your oil, what type is it?

If its too old or the wrong type it may have become like a tar when cold which the starter can sometime really struggle to turn the engine through if its bad enough!

I changed the oil about 2000 miles ago. Used a multigrade oil from a good motor factors. Worth a look though. Thanks
