well, was in halfords the other day picking up some car washing stuff, when i walked past the audio section...usually i walk straight through coz their stuff is over priced and shit looking, but i couldnt help notice the dvd head units. up to that point I've never been intrested in them as the heaters in my car are used quite a bit (the other half is always bloody cold..damn her!), so a flip up screen would just get in the way and be pointless....but my next car wouldnt suffer this problem so it got me to thinking....what do u guys reckon of the things? and for anyone that got them what brand u running what the specs, how much etc etc? they had an lg one in there for abou 900 with sat nav and bluetooth and microwave (okay lying about the bluetooth :p ) but you could get a similar unit without the nav for about 500...then buy a tomtom for 129...i can remember replying to a post about something similar saying no way would i pay that much for one fo those, lol..but i may just be changing my mind!!

My mate has got one on his punto. Its just the dvd/cd player with the screen though and hes got a gamecube or summit under the seats with the wireless controls. It is fun but IMO pretty pointless and I'd be too worried about anything getting nicked!

the fourth word on the second line nearly put me off reading this topic. halfords is only good for cleaning stuff, nothing else. if you want a dvd then go to a car audio shop and pay for quality.

i had a dvd player in my vtr and i loved it

lol, dude i would never buy one from there...halford is only go for cleaning products and other lil bits and bobs...nothing major like subs/amp/headunits or the like..its just going through there they caught my eye and now I'm on a mission to hind out which ones are best..practicality etc etc...could u remove the face off you are one?

The one my mates got just folds back into the head unit bit when its off so it just looks like a cd player...still a bit dodgy for getting nicked IMO. I haven't seen any that are removable.

these guys are pretty decent.

There are removable face ones, but only the control part comes off not the top of the screen. Alpine 310RB have a look, wkd head unit.

foxie that one is cheap as chips, yet looks good specs wise...dipsy, that one looks sexy but would require the selling of myself for me to afford it lol. Before i spent that much a head unit i would defo need to get my sound sorted out properly (decent comps, uprated door speekers in the back, seperate amp for the subs and speakers as apposed to running speakers off head unit..maybe a lil sound deading etc etc), and plus i prefer having the sat nav on the widscreen coz it means you are not taking your eyes completly away from whats ahead if u get me,

hmmm seems I'm looking for something inbetween the two!

edit: the alpine isnt that exspensive, i just went to the wrong website that was a bit overpriced

avoid the one foxy pointed out, mates got it and the screens gone proper fuzzy on start, when the screen comes out it flickers for like five minutes. only does this in the winter mind.

i couldnt have that! sitting in my car watching my box set of emmerdale only to be interupted by flickering and fuzziness? pah! its a shame coz it looks like quite a neat lil unit! yo desta if you are buzzing around...what brand is your one, how much was it and what can it do?

I've got one and i love it. I can fit up to 30 albums on 1 DVD and it displays track names, artists and abulms. The DVD quality is very good also.

I got a JVC one like no other Lol, The actual screen comes out as well as the control panel (Unlike the alpine ones where only the control panel comes off) And I've never had any problem with it + its full of features that till this day i haven't used lol. Drop me a PM if you want and i might be able to hook you up.

bloody hell leedo...that list is almost as long as the one i got when i failed my mot :p , those double din ones look good, they giive it a kinda factory fit look..kinda like the old skool 7 series bmw if anyones seen one....may have to look into that one depenending if the next vehicle is double din or not... Omz dude, i would love a hook up...that is if u can wait till roughly septemberish lol, thats when the new car will b arriving...but u say u can remove the screen as well as the control panel? what model is urs and whats the specs? does anyone get any problems with over heating or anything like that?

I've got an alpine one i brought off a mate who didnt want it. Comes in handy for keeping the missus amused on long journeys. Not a DVD on etho which is an arse but i have a seperate dvd player hidden away for when i need it.

Just gotta get the surround sound box plugged in when the cars back on the road.

And my passengers are sociable people who like to talk etc,not lock their minds away watching telly whilst i drive like a taxi driver. And i dont need sat-nav to do that,as i tend to know how to get to my destination - i might use a road map once or twice a year,which is preferable,as you can see the entire journey. And all the options. Id rather spend my money on something cinematic for the house.

I've just fitted a JVC KD-AVX33 into the Bora, its only a single DIN unit. It has a 3.5" screen, DVD, Bluetooth (both Handsfree & Audio Streaming), 5.1 surround sound & a usb cable so you can connect a USB HD or pen drive with MP3 etc. It also plays DivX! Picked it up for 350.

Its a cracking piece of kit, only think I can fault at the moment is it takes a little time to scan the USB source!

Then planning on getting a 7" JVC motorised screen to sit above it!

Fair point MK, but imho i thinks its in the same leauge as buying new rims for your car, or things like that...theres no good reasoning for doing it as a) when you are in your car u dont see them and b) the factory rim/alloys/steelies will do exactly the same thing...but if you reckon the car looks better and your willing to cough up the cash then so be it! where as most of my passengers are social people...i am not, and would enjoy having one as a distraction...lol, i guess it just one of those gadgets some people go for and some people dont.... i tend to need sat nav coz I'm a lazy mamma jamma whose map reading skills are shite, (but improving)

also if anyone knows or as tried....is the aoftware on these head units upgradable? for example if u bought one that didnt run divx would u be able to install it if u had the know how?
