Is this really as scummy as it looks or is it o.k to use in older cars. I think that Tesco do 4 litres 10w/40 for about £7.50. I know it would be the kiss of death to a brand new Golf gti but for a k reg polo it should be o.k shouldnt it?

Old engines need just as good oil as new ones. I tried cheap oil in my l reg polo but ended up going to a well known brand due to pressure problems. Same viscosity but without the oil light & buzzer. If your car uses or loses a lot of oil then a cheaper oil seems good value, but its not in the long run.

Yea it will be alright, it will fall out of its viscosity range quicker than a semi-synthetic but as-long as you change it say at-least 5k miles should be fine, at the end of the day old school mk1/2/3 style engines are invincible

I'm using Comma Eurolite and got a shit load of it (50 litres) for next to no money (50 quid). It's normally about £12 for 4.5 litres, so not too bad. Not the best oil in the world but I'd rather use it than supermarket superbudget oil.

I put cheapy oil in my sisters 6N which has been serviced at VW its whole life and it didn't like it one bit. Sounded really rattly and tappety. Drained it, put a new filter on and some fresh good oil and it was spot on again.

However, I ran my 1.0L MK3 on this stuff that was £2.40 for 5 litres. Didn't seem to mind it at all. But its not easy to kill a 1.0L, not even by pouring the oil down the throttle body and cleaning it out with a few litres of water.

It's cheap for a reason. I had a look at oil in Tesco the last time I was there, and if it's the one in a blue bottle, it's a bit naff. Not recommended by anyone and the API specs were outdated. You're probably better off spending a bit more and getting a far better oil from the likes of GSF (5L of semi-synth, VW approved, for less than £13).

Yeah, that's the stuff, Fuchs XTR. Same specs and everything as Quantum Silver...but a bit cheaper.

Well decided to buy 4 litres of tesco's oil and run it for about 2000k then I'll put some decent semi-synth in -sorta like an engine flush.

Never done an oil/filter change before but the whole process was a doddle. Luckily the old filter was one of those ones that has a hex nut on the end so removal was no bother. (mind you sump plug was a swine)

National tyres quoted me £30

Total price was about £13 for oil/filter/sump plug washer. (yeah I know rubbish oil though)

*Does anyone know the best place to get decent cheap semi synth (not online as the delivery charges can make it even more expensive)

If you intend on keeping the car for a while and doing big mileages then buying oil in bulk (if you can afford the initial outlay) is definately the way forward. I've got about 200 litres of oil in the workshop at the moment, 10w40, 20w50 and some 20w50 diesel oil. Very handy to have it when you need it, and even better when you sell it to your mates nice and cheap but still make enough to buy a pint

i get quatum silver from vag for around 13 quid at the moment. not convinced its particularly good though. does the job i suppose.

well yes from certain dealerships. my local hasnt had any for ages but still sell 1 litre bottles but not any 5 litres

Hmm i dunno perhaps a litre or so of bleach in the oil might stop it in its tracks lol
