IIRC its a late mk2 Coupe S (probably Ranger too) engine. Likely the same bottom end as an AAV/NZ.

i was under that inpression, but it has a early head on it, one with 4 headbolts on the outside and about 10 10mm bolts holding the rocker cover on?

nope it looks exactly the same as an MH the only difference is they had the plastic cam belt cover same as Mk3's which are a bugger when you want to change the cam belt! they were supposed to be more designed for economy and the environment some of the later ones had a cat fitted. think all parts are compatable with the MH.

ill get some pics cos I'm confused lol. the engine is in a mk1 golf 1.3, I've got some paper work sayin bottom end was changed to a 2g, but its got a early head, its a 5speed aswell.

Early type heads will fit on nearly all the small blocks, even an ABD.

The engine code of the block might be near the front engine mount (alternator) on the upper face of the block. If you can't see it, you might need to clean the area up. Nick's right, the bottom end could have been replaced but retaining the schleppebel head. Hopedully they just have the engine code wrong though as the 2g head and original mk1 golf 1.3 head don't match very well. (low compression).
