Not sure if I've put this in the wrong forum; admins please move if necessary!

I recently acquired a new instrument panel for my girlfriend's car (thanks Glenn!). Obviously, the mileage is different to what's actually on the car - is there an easy way to change this? I'd rather not change the clocks over - the new one is six digits plus trip, whereas the old one is five digits and no trip.

What car is it for? It's fairly easy with a couple of small screwdrivers to clock a mk3 polo (1990-1994) odometer and probably similar for before that, but I think later than that they have digital ones?

Ok same as mine then, and while it's alot easier to change the unit over I see why you want the trip counter too! You need to take the speedo half of the unit out, prise the needle off (taking note of where it naturally rests - NOT on the stopper) and unscrew the two small screws holding the dial face on.

From memory you should be able to see/get at all the digits and mechanism now. It's just a case of getting a small screwdriver or two and pushing the dials round, you have to push neighbouring ones apart too and then they'll click round with a bit of work.

Be really careful taking the needle off!

I tried to do the same operation when I changed my clocks (to give trip count/rev count), and in the process shattered the plastic covering on the needle center. Not sure if this has affected the speedo reading, GPS recons its 6mph to slow though.

You're not supposed to change the mileage. You report the change of odometer in the service book,and record both mileages and the difference. The wheels are not designed to be turned independently and the little tabs on the side can break. Any sign of them being tampered will render the car considered clocked - you're best just recording the change in the documents.
