Hey, got cracking with the wiring today after fitting the engine (its a 1.3 3F on Weber).

I used the mk3 thermostat housing (same as late mk2?) which has two temperature sensors for the coolant I presume. Am I right in thinking these can be spliced into the early mk2 loom somewhere? There is a sensor for the temperature gauge and temperature light in the dash, right?

That's my main concern at the moment, but I have a few more wiring questions:

Pink/white from coil - that's rev counter? Or no..?

I can ditch the manifold preheating wiring surely..?

Think that's it! I'll ask more no doubt when I get a bit further..!

you dont need the blue one, the black one is for the temperature gauge and light. Mk2 sensors are a bit different (spade connectors) so if you get one of them it will plug straight into the origial loom. You then just need to earth the other pin. (you'll have to use trail and error but I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter which way around you put the wires) The light just comes on when the gauge reaches a high level or when the coolant level in the tank gets too low (if the car has a level sensor)

Red with white stripe is the rev counter (might have faded to pink, sounds like the right one)

I don't run the preheater on mine, it can struggle to start though at times.

Aha I thought as much! Worked out about the black one, and already got all the plugs off a scrapped late mk2.

I have plugged the hedgehog in, but apparently there's an inlet manifold preheater thermoswitch somewhere?? Is that the T piece in the inlet manifold coolant pipe on my 1.05? Cos if it is I'm gonna ditch it hehe... As long as it starts eventually its all good.

Thankfully my Dad has a Ranger I can use as cross reference. Taking a guess here, is the blue one for the autochoke on the Pooberg?

The blue one on the later ones is for the hedgehog IIRC but I could be wrong. The autochoke is mechanical and independant of any electrickery. On earlier ones the sensor is either on one of the coolant pipes to the inlet manifold (Sounds like what youve got) or on the inlet manifold itself (GK engine) if you are ditching it you may as well shave off all the hedgehog heater pins in the inlet manifold.

If you leave it all alone it should still work as the wiring for the hedgehog is above the fusebox IIRC. You might regret not having it come winter.

Ok decided to keep it and use the blue temp sensor for the preheater wiring, just to help when its a cold day. I removed the old T piece from the inlet hose so can't really use that lol.

Only things I don't have now are barbs for the fuel pump I have which is really frustrating!
