Does the air filter housing unit just twist off or do you have to undo the whole unit that attach to what looks like the air flow gizmo.

mk3 1.05 - I've just done some routine maintaince , oil/filter + fanbelt. Set out to do the plugs but was unsure about access due to air filter housing (didnt have my Haynes manual with me). Just taken a look and it says that in order to access the spark plugs on aau models it will be necessary to remove air filter housing.

It seems to say in the book that the housing unit will come away once the retaining bolts and ring are removed.

Do you also have to disconnect that plastic valve thing?

Ah right ok.

The plastic valve thing just unclips as you can probably see, ease the vacuum hose and warm air pipe off and put it to the side. Then it's just undo the 3 10mm nuts and the ring lifts off along with the filter housing. There's a breather on the bottom so be careful not to kink it when taking it off.

5 minute job to pull it off the throttle body.

* Got this done - The spark plugs are in good nick (excatly as Haynes shows they should be) however the breather hose underneath has a small hole in it - does this make a difference and can I just tape it up?

A small hole in the breather won't make too much difference I wouldn't have thought but it wouldn't hurt to wrap some insulation tape round it nice and tight.

What does that hose do? We forgot to reconnect it when we rebuilt my engine, it ran rough as fuck and it seems to run a little better with it connected...

it's a crankcase breather hose if not connected could mess with the oil pressure.
