Changing Gearbox Oil

Featured Replies

Hi all,

my polo has recently started making a funny grindy/whirring noise when in gear, stopping when i hold the clutch down, and i've been told that i probably need to change my gearbox oil. I've spoken to VW, and they;ve told me what type of oil i need, cost, etc, but i was wondering if there's likely to be anything else i'll need to do it (aside from a bucket).

my main concern is how do i pour oil in through a hole that's on the side?

You need a pipe (preferably clear) with a funnel on the end to fill the box up when it's in the car. For more info, checkout the gearbox thread in the faq section.

As for the noise, it could also be the clutch release bearing, does it do it in neutral or when coasting?

nah, its fine in neutral and while coasting, hence why we think its the gearbox oil level

so, oil-wise, i dont need anything a trip to asda wont solve?

went to change mine today bout couldn't get the plugs out for the life of me! tried the whole wheel nut and grips but it didn't work! how did other people go about this?

spray on some wd40 the night before and buy a proper 17mm hex key, should only be a couple of quid.

What kind of oil would i want to put in my 4 speed on a 1.0L mk3 and also will the bolts on that also be a 17mm hex drive?

Thanks

Dan

Ep80w/90,and yes - 17mm hex. Its said to take 3.5 litres but i got 4 litres of a 4.5 litre can in mine - cost me ten quid. Fill it up until its overflowing.

That will be why your clutch is slipping, the excess will have pissed out the breather and onto your clutch- good job

Gearbox holds 3.1litres too- I suggest you don't overfill them too much, you will blow seals.

Thanks guys

 yep, the breather goes straight onto the cltuch.... i also suggest you don't do that!
