Hi everyone,

My son has just got a 1992 Polo 1.0 Coupe Catalyst which he loves to bits but a fuel leak has developed when the engine is running.

Do any of you guys know what the part is so we can look for a replacement?

That's the fuel pump. This is the one which supplies the fuel under pressure for use in the injection system (there's another inside the fuel tank which feeds fuel to this pump) and it isn't exactly cheap. GSF do one for about £100 if my memory serves, but could it be that the pipes are split/ perished or the clips aren't tight enough?

Hope it's not the pump...just checked the pipes and clips and they seem to be OK but the leak does seem to eminate from this gland.

mmm, strange. As a quick fix, you could get a spare one from a scrap yard which should at least stop the leak, and save you a few pounds . Only thing is, how long will it last? This is the gamble with second hand parts.

I've just overhauled that little area of the fuel system on my 1.0L coupe, new filter hoses clips and removes the rust off the mounting bracket then gave it a coat of hammerite. After refiting all of this somehow the fuel pump had managed to seize and like you i wasnt prepared to fork out £100+ for a new one, so off to the scrapys i went and found myself quite a good condition pump for only £5. It hasnt been on for long but so far it seems fine, constant fuel pressure and no odd noises etc... However like Daniel said its always a gamble from scrappys but for £5 instead of £100 you cant go wrong realy.
