Hello everybody

I think I have decided to mildly pimp my ride.

First up is some new wheels.

Up till now i've paid no attention to wheel/tyre sizes.

I don't plan to modify the arches or anything, but what I need to know is this;

What do all the different dimensions referred to when talking about wheels mean? Rim diameter and centre bore I understand, but I don't get references to things like;

P.C.D and Offset (think it's something to do with how far the wheels stick out of the arches, eh?)

Also, i've got 13rims as standard on my mk3 coupe, and i'm looking at getting 14s or 15s. What tyres would I have to get? Also what about the width of the rims? Maybe I shouldn't bother, I clearly don't know anything!! (what a surprise!!)

Anybody have any words of encouragement and or advice?

EDIT: basically, for my car, what do I have to fill in these boxes on ebay?????

Rim Width - Your call really, personal preference

Rim Diameter - As small as possible - the tighter the better

And as for the choice of rubber? Thats your call! :lol:

PCD is the bolt fitment - VW used a 4x100 in the polo and mk2 golf.

Offset is how far the wheels stick out from the hub, allows you to find out whether the wheels will rub inside the arch - especially at the front on full lock.

Search the forum for the 'tyre size calculator' = you enter the tyre size you are running now and it will tell you what size tyre is needed on what size rim, iirc. This is to maintain the rolling radius - the overall size of wheel and tyre combined, others the distance round the wheel will increase and thus affect both the speedo and odometer.

Do you know what width the standard rims are on mk3s?

Also, what the fuck is an aspect ratio, I though it was something to do with tvs!

The steels on a mk3 are 13 x5 i think, not too sure on standard tyres as I've never had mk3 steels.

I believe the aspect ratio is to do with tyre profile, though I'm sure someone else can correct me...

You specify the tyre size as follows - 195/40/15

15 would be the wheel size - 15 inch

195 would be the width across the tread - 195 mm

40 would be the profile, or height of the sidewall as a percentage of the tyre width.

I may be wrong, but thats how i understand it... hope it helps. Took me a while to get it!

As soon as I start thinking of ways to spend money, the car finds a solution for me, now the fucking petrol tanks leaking! Grrrr

That doesnt matter, wheels are more important anyway.

Just make sure you don't smoke round the back of the car, and only fill up with half a tank at a time. Be fine!
