any ideas why my gearbox whines like a banshee over 60 in 5th?

I've heard the bearings aren't too good in the boxes

is it a simple fix (I'm pretty handy with my hands and technically minded)

I've used the search and found loadsa "i cant get into gear" threads but no whining threads (excluding all the rants.. lol)

any help appreciated

is it whining in any othergears? or just 5th? is it a grinding sound or a higher pitched drill like sound?

its seems to be the most obvious in 5th and it sounds like a supercharger... so like a higher pitched drill... lol

if the others are whisper quiet then it could be the syncro in 5th that needs replacing, but if you have any noise in the others it will be bearings. how many miles you done?

Is the oil level ok

If the oil levels got too low, fith gear is usually the first to go.Pretty common I'm afraid

oil level was checked circa 2000 miles ago and was fine.. maybe its that it has got low at some point in its life

car is showing 144k but I'm sure it has had an engine swap at some point in its life as DVLA shows it as a 1.05

so will it just get noisy if the syncro has gone? i dont mind losing 5th gear, i dont use it much.. lol

i just dont want the gearbox to go pop on me.. lol

if i covert it to a 1.4 (ABD) engine can i use the gearbox from that Golf/Ibiza too?

or if i can find a GT box will that bolt straight on?

Well I know mine is playing up so having another synco fitted, about 15 or so pounds I believe the part to be. so it's not a big job. as for taking the box out the only way for that to happen is if the synco breaks up then goodbye gearbox lol
