Car: 9N, 1.2 6 valve

Problem: Exhaust emissions light comes on

My 9n has randomly developed a bit of a problem, wondered if anybody could shead some light because i doubt vw will do anything apart from tell me theres nothing wrong. The idle has become a bit shakey, much much more than normal if i sit and rest my foot on the clutch my leg shakes quite alot, if you rev it up a bit to say 1k it smooths out, but in the last few days it's starting giving me a warning light "exhaust emissions" fault, which seems to go away if you accelerate and bring the revs up or switch the engine on and off again. Think its the timing but its chain cam isnt it? so dont know how it would have slipped out (i dont know much about engines so I'm probably completely wrong) or could be the lambda probe?

If anybody has a clue please help me!? If i had a VAGCOM lead and a laptop would i be able to read the fault?
