I've done everything in the haynes.Drained,removed breathers,fuel lines etc.

Have jack at the ready to lower and oh yes, it looks like it will never come out

I find it ammusing that the Haynes says it will drop down :-)

Do later edition Spanish made cars have bigger tanks?

I know it's a f#'#ing bitch of a job but I need to get it out to do some welding, any ideas/shedding of some light?

Does it push forward or back to drop?

I've got a mk3 - wonder if it's the same?

Well.. i'm not sure if the mk2 differs much,

But certainly on a mk3 you have to undo a couple of bolts, on of which holds the big strap underneath the tank.

You also can undo the drivers side rear axle mount (on the chassis) to level the filler neck out.

The tank itself is on a bit of a lip to hold it up.. so you need to pull it a bit towards the front of the car (if memory serves)

Also - undo the handbrake cable - makes life easier.

As i say - the is mk3 based knowledge, but since the mk3 is a facelift mk2, it might not be too different!

Undoing the drivers side rear axle mount makes sense to me and yeh the handbrake cable removal will help.

I think it's one of these jobs where if you go back to it with a fresh head(and no petrol fumes)

it'll seem more achievable.

I might add that i'm well aware of the dangers involved with petrol tanks,the fumes and the explosive nature

of even an empty tank

When the tank goes back in I'm giving it some severe anti rust treatment,paint from Frost me thinks :-)

thers no need to remove the swingarm mount, just take off the wheel and slide the filler pipe out of the arch.

yeah late mk2 (post 1985) and mk3 tanks are near enough the same to change, although its more fiddly with the mk3 because of the fuel lines to the tank pump.

OK.. yes, you don't have to remove the mount.

But its fiddly enough and it sounds like the guy is doing the job on his own! Thats the way the garages tend to do it.
