Fuel starvation issue - FIXED!

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

Got a little problem :-( , my mk2 is running now with GT block on a Weber DMTL carb. It goes nicely on the flat when I leave my house, but as soon as I go up a hill it slows down and stalls. Even with my foot right down. I then have to sit in the middle of the road for a while with the car switched off and wait for a bit. It seems to be better if I leave the pump going for a while and then start the car (it's an ignition switched electric one design to sit in the engine bay from Fuelparts).

I'm inclined to think its fuel starvation and not icing, because icing should occur on any hill if it is this bad. I restricted the fuel return from the swirl pot and it went a lot better, got up the 1st hill then the 2nd bigger hill it died again :(

Can I just do away with the swirl pot and connect the hose straight to the carb? Hmmm I'll try this while waiting for a reply ok

Thanks in advance, took me over a week to do this and its not right

Right it's worse when I connect the pump straight to the carb. Which makes sense come to think of it as there will be no reserve from a swirl pot and it can't keep up...

The pump cost £44 and they assured me it would be ok I'm really pissed off now, without a running car and left still looking for a pump.

The weber folk like quinny or oddball would know, keep bumping

I'm interested to see how you go as I have a weber and manifold sitting in the wings

if I can ever get the welding finished.

cheers Dunc

It may well be a float height issue IMO.

Ah you may be onto something here, now how do you set the float height, is it something to do with the needle valve attachment spring thingy lol?

Think I'll have a look in the morning, well tired atm...

Wait if the float height was wrong surely it wouldnt run well until you hit a hill?

I don't think it will be carb icing in July even with the weird weather we are having.

I did always wonder why the fuel tank for a Mk2 carb with pipes at the bottom is different from one for a Mk3 injection.

Right it wasn't icing you're right I figured that out quick enough as it seemed to happen all the time.

I can tell you that it's fixed now though :)

The return from the swirl pot has been blocked off. As the fuel pump slows down and even stops when there is enough pressure at the carb, the return wasn't allowing it to do its job properly. So taking out the return means there is always a constant pressure at the carb, due to this type of fuel pump.

Took it out around the lanes, up steep hills, gave it some welly (as much as I dared without the exhaust falling off its held on by wire) and all is good. It goes like stink
