hi there recently when I've gone to start my car up it starts up fine the cuts out imediatly, then try again and itl startup cut out again then third or fourth time itl start fine and then run fine and pull real well. So I'm abit confused, do you reckon itl just need abit of a service like plugs and oil/filter? I suppose it is due one, its an spi btw withand induction kit but this hasnt made an difference since i put it on.

and help or suggestions very welcome :)

i will bet my life savings that the ignition switch is burnt out. its a very common prob with the mk4 for some reason. the part is cheap, but fitting is a bitch esp if you have an airbag. a failed switch give exactly the probs you describe. would bother with changing plugs etc unless its due a service

i'd say temp sender. infact i'm 99% sure it will be!

I'm having a similar issue except mine won't actually start. Would you say it's the ignition switch or temp sender?

Which sender are you on about philly?

Oh and g40jon - how much of a bitch is it to change?

its a big bitch if the airbag goes off cos you wont have a face left! from what i can remember you need a special tool if it has an airbag. i got a mechanic mate to help me do my birds 1.6glx

mine does have an air bag :(

yeh so does mine :(

well it started 2nd time this morning to go to work, went the long way and gave it a good old ragging, then after work it started first time, got me boss to order me in some spark plugs an an ultra cheap price so may aswell fit them, and gonna change the oil at the weekend as it is due a serive, well has been for awhile.

cheers for the suggestions guys ill keep a eye out :)

Bet your life savings eh?

temerature sender! whats causes the problem is that sender tells the car its running alot colder than it is causing it to cut out on warm up!

Coolant temp sender, if it knackered, will cause bad hot and cold starts.

Ignition switch isnt too hard to do,you will need a puller to get the outer splined shaft off tho, some mole grips for the shear bolt and dont turn the ignition on when the airbag is disconnected or it will log a fault and bring the airbag warning light on.

for the past two days its been fine and today I've trekked around abit so turned it on and off a few times and its fine. got new plugs at 2 quid each so ill stick them in at the weekend anyway.

cheers for the help guys

i had the same problem... seems you have sorted yours however mine started to go like that sorted itself then a few weeks down the line started doing it again as philly said ... temperature sender.... my ecu was telling the car engine temperature was at 54degree's when it was stone cold at inital startup. if the problem re occur's would be a good place to start..

Well it's off to the scrappies this weekend for a temp sender (am I right in thinking I find that in the coolant bottle?)

Then if that doesn't fix the thing we're after a new ignition switch. - Philly as the bits I need hard to find i.e the puller? what's one of them?

well my cambelt snapped last night and its not even due for another 6000 miles. i think this might have been the problem if the timing was slightly out? and yes where do you find the temperature sender?

thanks :)
