Dog Farts MK1 Polo N

1979 VW Polo N

It all kicked off summer 2006 as i wanted something to play with at the weekends and to help me get back into the VW scene that i so badly missed since starting my job here and not having as much free time. My main objectives were that it must be a MK1 VW of some description, condition not important as i quite fancied running a shitter next to my Shiny Corrado VR6. A MK1 golf was looking a good bet as there are still a fair few around if you know where to look and are easy to do stuff to. Whilst scouring the classifieds and Ebay i came accross a MK1 polo and can seriously never recall seeing one before. The photos were crap on Ebay but i added it to my watch list anyway. I asked the seller to email me more pics but he didnt know how to (His mate did the listing for him) but he told me it had been recently resprayed as the previous elderly owner had touched it up with household paint - he confirmed it was straight and 99% rust free and had a genuine low mileage. I decided to bid on it but got outbid at the last minute. One week later i called the seller to see if it had been collected and he said no, this is where i haggled a price less than i bid on it, subject to me viewing it the next day. Anyway to cut a long story short i drove it home the next day with nearly a years ticket on it for a reasonable some. As the seller had only used it for a couple of weeks whilst his beemer was being fixed he hadnt sent of the V5, leaving me with the previous owners name and address. I decided to write to her to find out a little more about its life before my ownership and enclosed a picture of the car. Her response wasnt quite what i expected. (typed on a typewriter i shit you not!)

Here is what i received back......

"Dear Mr Yaxley,

I'm afraid I'm going to be a great disappointment to you. I've tried hard to find anything interesting to tell you about the polo, but without success. I can only say that when it was new, my Husband bought a golf and because he loved to drive we used his car a lot more than mine. By the time i had to be independent I was too old for anything but local driving and a few months ago i decided that I wasnt safe even for that.

My Son drove it to the local breakers yard and was told that it would probably be put in the crusher. We were not suprised. My son had worked on the car for many years to treat and paint over old rust spots but was beginning to complain that he was losing the battle.

No service history of any interest and no accidents. I've searched through the family albums but found not a single photograph. Thank you for the one you sent me. Its good to see dear old LEV-600V looking so magnificent once again, and nice to know that its in such good hands. The mileometer reading is genuine."

Luckily i had found a good example and joined clubpolo to learn more about the MK1 Polo, this is where i got hooked on all things MK1 Polo and would like to take this opportunity to say thanks for all the help i have received in response to some of my perhaps 'Newbie' questions!

Anyway it soon got out of hand and I soon had a set of alloys on their way courtesy of Ebay.be (Bargain!) and a lowering kit and caps thanks to Mr PhilJ. Old School MK1 was the look i wanted so the hunt started for the much admired chrome bumper look.

Read about all the rest below :)

Engine- 895cc with 4 speed box - Completely standard bar Klaxon horn.

Chassis- Jackson Tuning lowering shocks and springs with added lowering top mounts.

Brakes- Standard.

Interior- Stripped out rear seats, 8-Ball gearknob, Early Scirocco Storm steering wheel, No stereo, Furry dice.

Exterior - NOS Audi 50 Chrome bumpers. Audi 50 Grille, NOS bumper end caps. Aerial retrofitted with Union '76 Aerial ball. German style pressed plates. MK1 Polo GT badge.

Wheels- 13x7 ATS Classics with 175 50 13 Yokohama A539's.

Future plans- Nothing set in stone but would like to tidy some bodywork, fit a bigger lump, get arches rolled and coilies fitted. New wheels.

Here are some snaps in time order.
